Notes On John 6:66-71
Introduction: Because many of Christ’s
disciple turned from Him and went back to their former Life. Some use
these verses as an example that a believers can
quit believing and lost the salvation of their soul. Many today
believe that one could quit believing in
Christ and lose their salvation.
That is a
true statement anyone can lose their salvation, if there is anything we
have to do in gaining
the salvation of our soul. It becomes our
salvation, man saving his own soul. Man is too sinful for him to
be able to save his own soul. He could
never suffer enough to pay the debt of sin. Roman
6:23
The Salvation of man’s soul is a total, completed, to the uttermost, and
finished work of Christ
on the cross. 1
Cor 15:1-11; John 14:6. Christ talked
about an immersion Mat 20:22-23. Baptism.
He was not talking about Water
Baptism which is symbolic of the Gospel and what Christ has done for you.
Romans 6:3-9.
Christ's work on the cross and afterwards is total, complete, and finished.
Heb 7:25.
Christ Didn’t take any short
cuts just because he is God’s only son. John 3:16.
God did the work through His
Son. The correct wording
is God’s Salvation of man's soul. Christ paid the Sin debt and rose the
third day.
Isa. 42:6-7 NIV
6 "I, the LORD, have called you in righteousness; I will take hold of your
hand.
I will keep you and will make you to be a covenant for the people and a
light for the Gentiles,
7 to open eyes that are blind, to free captives from prison
and to release from the dungeon those who sit in darkness.
It is so great when the N. T. and the O. T. agree as there is never any
doubt that they should agree.
Jehovah
( Jesus ) was declared as the one holding the righteous ( God’s
righteous ).
John 10:28-29 ; Eze. 33:13.
For a better understanding in our study we need to read the verses which
appear before the verses
in question . Starting at John 6:53. Everything
in the bible has to be in keeping in context.
The use of translations is just another tool for the use in presenting
God’s word properly.
The
soul living in this age is so blessed they have so much written and electronic
Biblical material.
The
use of commentaries should be used to see if someone else sees the same
thing you see in the
scriptures.
The use of Commentaries are the use of someone else's understanding of
God's Word the same
as
you. Sometimes tradition can lead one to a wrong understanding of the scriptures,
on the other hand the
customs and tradition of the time the passages were written help in the
understanding.
Example
Mat 3:3 KJV For this is he that was spoken of by the prophet Esaias, saying,
The voice of one crying in the wilderness,
Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.
Mat 3:3 CEV John was the one the prophet Isaiah was talking about,
when he said, "In the desert someone is shouting,
'Get the road ready for the Lord! Make a straight path for him.' "
When someone of important or royalty comes to town there is a lot of preparation
that goes on. They would fill pot holes,
straighten roads, and cut hills down. To a certain extent this happens
to day when a king or President comes to town. In
other words Jesus was first presented to the Jews as King. This is sometimes
called word pictures.
The number one rule of bible study is to read the word of God. When You
read leave out what man
has taught. Not every one can read the original.
Both commentaries and translations have a certain amount of man’s ideas,
thoughts in them.
Some of the most accurate word for word translations are the one’s people
dislike most. Everyone
is looking for a translation or commentaries which says what they want
them to say or have been taught.
Further in the text we will try to answer some of these question. Some
of the readers can read
the answer in God’s word for themselves. God’s word is simple to understand.
There are a few easy rules. The theme is redemption through God’s Gift
His son Jesus and punishment
for
sin and unbelief
John 3:16.
Through God all things are possible. Salvation is a work of God.
Heb 7:25.
Commentary start for the study is at the end of the translations.

John
6:66-71 CEV
66 Because of what Jesus said, many of his disciples turned
their backs on him and stopped following him.
67 Jesus then asked his twelve disciples if they were going
to leave him.
68 Simon Peter answered, “Lord, there is no one else that we
can go to! Your words give eternal life.
69 We have faith in you, and we are sure that you are
God’s Holy One.”
70 Jesus told his disciples, “I chose all twelve of you,
but one of you is a demon!”
71 Jesus was talking about Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot.
He would later betray Jesus, even though he was one of
the twelve disciples.

deserted him.
67 Then Jesus turned to the Twelve and asked,
“Are you going to leave, too?”
68 Simon Peter replied, “Lord, to whom would we go?
You alone have the words that give eternal life.
69 We believe them, and we know you are the
Holy One of God.”
70 Then Jesus said, “I chose the twelve of you,

Before We continue we need to look at theses verses in context.
John 6:53-71 Amplified Bible (AMP)
53 And Jesus said to them, I assure
you, most solemnly I tell you,
you cannot have any life in you unless you eat the flesh of the
Son of Man and drink His blood [unless you appropriate His life and the
saving merit of His blood].
54 He who feeds on My flesh and drinks My blood has (possesses now) eternal
life,
and I will raise him up [from the dead] on the last day.
55 For My flesh is true and genuine food, and My blood is true and
genuine drink.
56 He who feeds on My flesh and drinks My blood dwells continually in Me,
and I [in like manner dwell continually] in him.
57 Just as the living Father sent Me and I live by (through, because of)
the Father,
even so whoever continues to feed on Me [whoever takes Me for his food
and is nourished by Me] shall
[in his turn] live through and because of Me.
58 This is the Bread that came down from heaven. It is not like the manna
which our forefathers ate,
and yet died; he who takes this Bread for his food shall live forever.
59 He said these things in a synagogue while He was teaching at Capernaum.
60 When His disciples heard this, many of them said, This is a hard and
difficult and strange saying (an offensive and unbearable message).
Who can stand to hear it? [Who can be expected to listen to such teaching?]
61 But Jesus, knowing within Himself that His disciples were
complaining and protesting and grumbling about it, said to them:
Is this a stumbling block and an offense to you?
[Does this upset and displease and shock and scandalize you?]
62 What then [will be your reaction] if you should see the Son of Man ascending
to [the place] where He was before?
63 It is the Spirit Who gives life [He is the Life-giver]; the flesh conveys
no benefit whatever [there is no profit in it].
The words (truths) that I have been speaking to you are spirit and life.
64 But [still] some of you fail to believe and trust and have faith.
For Jesus knew from the first who did not believe and had no faith
and who would betray Him and be false to Him.
65 And He said, This is why I told you that no one can come to Me unless
it is granted him [unless he is enabled to do so] by the Father.
66 After this, many of His disciples drew back (returned to their old associations)
and no longer accompanied Him.
67 Jesus said to the Twelve, Will you also go away? [And do you too desire
to leave Me?]
68 Simon Peter answered, Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words
(the message) of eternal life.
69 And we have learned to believe and trust, and [more] we have come
to know [surely] that You are the Holy One of God, the Christ (the Anointed
One), the Son of the living God.
70 Jesus answered them, Did I not choose you, the Twelve?
And [yet] one of you is a devil (of the evil one and a false accuser).
71 He was speaking of Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, for he was about
to betray Him,
[although] he was one of the Twelve.

“I get out of my religion. I care about the
world, but I am going to take care of myself first.
Christ had a lot of followers and disciples
that were so carnal ( Flesh ) there was no way they could

Cor 2:14.
Jesus was the perfect sacrifice. He gave his body. Christ shed his blood.
John
1:1 ; John 1:14.
Christ was made flesh and dwelt among the
world. You must believe in what and who Christ was and is.
You must allow the work God did through His
son to be applied to you heart. In the bible the heart represents the whole
of a person’s being. Jesus lives today at the right hand of the Father
in heaven.
Verses 54
in the Amplified version it states if one believes they possess
eternal life now.
Christ Flesh
is true Flesh equaling the Word.
Verses 55-56
Cannibalism was forbidden by the Jews and their laws. Lev
17:11-14. To the Hebrews
this was contrary in the teachings they had grown up to understand. To
them it was gross ( unthinkable ).
the masses
of people even professing Christian of today say we have a bloody religion
. Heb 9:22; Heb 13:12.
Following
Christ may very well be Called bloody, but the blood is what saves. The
Life is in the Blood.
If we live by the study of the Word and Prayer it shows we have Christ
dwelling in our hearts.
Verses 57
Christ is saying He lives by the Father and we if we live in Christ then
Christ
gives us Eternal life
and He keeps.
Verses 58
While the nation of Israel wondered in the wilderness Manna was sent down
from heaven.
The bread ( manna ) would not last at that time. Christ had not died on
the Cross. They were looking
forward in faith being pointed toward the cross of calvary. Then they had
to get more every day to
stay alive because of the bread of life, they were dependent on God.
Jesus is trying to make the ones that are true seekers to see it is He
Himself which came
to seek and save the world. Luke 19:10;
Luke 12:31; Mat 6:33; 1 Tim 2:4
Verses 59
Christ was very bold, He spoken this in what today one might call the church.
John even tells
the city.
Verses 60
As it has been said before if the preachers preaching doesn’t prick the
heart of the soul, something
is wrong. Is he using the word of God. The Church members during
preaching should pray for the
Holy Spirit to bring all things to remembrance while the preacher preaches
John 14:26.
Next at invitation be praying for a poor lost soul even if the person is
not at this church or meeting.
Some are not at church but saved, they need to be prayed for and visited
some people will not come unless
they are invited. Just think for a moment Why do companies spend millions
on advertisement inviting
people to purchase their products and services, It works.
Christ seemed so opposite to what they thought was right they missed a
blessing along with their
soul is lost forever. Never saved in the first place.
[ I used the term poor lost soul. This was meant in the compassionate way.
It was not meant
to say the soul had the lack of wealth.
Webster's Dictionary 1962
Poor == adj. necessitous; having little or
no means; destitute of riches; without strength,
beauty, or dignity; dejected; spiritless; insignificant; humble; lean;
without fertility;
an expression of tenderness; compassion, disdain: n. pl. poor persons collectively
(with the).
Verses 61
Of course Jesus who is God the Son is all knowing. Many had though that
here is easy street if
we just follow this man, everything will be all right. They were looking
at the material part of life.
I told a young man, in his thirties, the Salvation was a commitment on
his part.
His reaction was typical for today. Hold on I am not committing to anything.
He is look at him trying
to live the life Himself, walk to walk, that one thing no one can
do Christ does the perfecting. one just
has to commit their heart, body, mind, and soul to Christ keeping.
Souls had rather go to Hell
( the lake of fire)
than to give a commitment ( repent ), of their
heart and soul to Jesus. By not giving and allowing Christ into their heart
one of the greatest
blessings a soul could ever have is lost never gained. Sin causes a soul
to lose the Joy of God’s
Salvation of their soul. Once saved sin doesn't cause the lost of ones
soul. The World is Lonely
without the Closeness of God the father, Jesus, and the Holy Ghost ( Spirit
). Sin causes a situation
like the prodigal son. Luke 15:10-32. He was
still his Fathers son.
Christ died for all of your sins past, present, and future
sins plus the sin of the
human race Adam’s sin which is pasted on the all of the human race. Roman
5:12. After one surrenders
their soul to Jesus, God’s finished work. Sin causes one to lose the joy
and rewards of God fellowship.
Joy is lost due to sin. This sin cause a problem in fellowship with all
parts of the Godhead. Sin can make
a person think they are lost this is what the Devil wants.
1
John 5:10-20.
When We were all children our parents had
rules If we obeyed our parents the fellowship was Good
from our stand point our place of view an our parents also. When we obeyed
there was not any
punishment. The moment we fail to keep one of the rules the fellowship
was broken and there was
Chastisement. The same is true with God. Heb
12:8. God is long Suffering. 2
Peter 3:9.
Verses 62
If Christ teaching offended them or is a stumbling block, what the more
would they be upset if
they saw the Son of Man ascending back where He came from. The would be
disciples still could
not see if Christ rose into heaven in front of their eyes.
Verses 63
The Spirit gives life. The flesh is nothing, it decays. The words
Christ had been speaking were
spirit and life. Christ is still speaking Spirit and Life today through
each believer with the help
of the Holy Ghost. A disciple should live a life which shows Christ.
The believer must pick up Christ’s cross. Do you have a testimony about
what Christ has done in your
life? Can you tell the world about the Salvation God gave you for
asking. The word of God is sharp
Heb 4:12. Are you studying so God, through
the Holy Ghost, can bring all things to remembrance?
Verse 64
Even though many had seen the miracles and the workings of God in Jesus
Christ. They still would
not surrender. If theses saw Jesus ascending into heaven there would still
be doubt.
Three loves causes every soul that chooses to not accept Christ as their
personal saviour.
1 John 2:16.
1. Love of the Flesh,
2. Love of Pride of life, and
3. The love of the Eyes.
James 1:13-16; CP. Gen 3:6.
One will even betray Christ. Today there are preachers, pastors that have
a demon in them.
We are told to watch the spirits. 1 John 4:1;
Jude 1:3; Luke 12:57; Acts 17:11; Romans 16:19;
1 Cor 14:29; 1 Thess 5:21; Rev 2:2
Verse 65
[Bible in Basic English] (John
6:65)
And he said, This is why I said to you, No man is able to come to me if
he is not given the power to do so by the Father.
The God head works together for the salvation of man’s soul.
God the Father answer the prayers of dear Believer. There is the loving
mother praying to
Father God for the salvation of their sons or daughters souls.
Fathers and Grandparents praying for Grandchildren. Before a soul is saved
someone has to start
praying God will call that person. The Holy Spirit uses the Word to bring
(convict ) a soul to a
saving knowledge of Jesus Christ. Heb 4:12;
Romans 10:13-17.
[Bible
in Basic English] (Hebrews 4:12)
12 For the word of God is living and full of power, and is sharper
than any two-edged sword,
cutting through and making a division even of the soul and the spirit,
the bones and the muscles,
and quick to see the thoughts and purposes of the heart.
The two edged Sword is not talking about two sides, rather one cutting
side sharpen on both edges.
Verse 66
Due to what Christ had been teaching many of the disciples went back to
their old ways.
Found this in Matthew Henry’s writings.
The degree of their apostasy: They walked no more with him, returned no
more to him and attended no
more upon his ministry. It is hard for those who have been once enlightened,
and have tasted the
good word of God, if they fall away, to renew them again to repentance,
Heb. 6:4-6.
Henry, Matthew, Matthew Henry’s Commentary on the Bible,
(Peabody, MA: Hendrickson Publishers) 1997
The disciples who turned away could be said to have tasted but yet they
would not believe they would
not surrender.
They were not saved in the first place, they only tried it in the flesh.
They said it was too hard.
How can I be
too hard when it is God’s salvation of Man’s soul.
The hard part is repenting changing your mind to the point you know you
need Christ.
Many believe
church is a Good thing, believing the church saves. More believe Christ
was a Good teacher he
had Good ideas.
Only Christ saves He paid the price once for all.
Heb 10:10 KJV
By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of
Jesus Christ once for all.
There are somethings
no one can make a soul understand until a soul opens their heart to Jesus.
Accept Christ
as the pay for you sins. Have you taken care of the sin of the human race.
The sin Adam
pasted on to everyone born of the water. To be saved one has to be born
of the spirit.
Verse 67
Jesus asks the Twelve if they will leave also. In Verse
68 Peter speaks for the Twelve.
Peter basically says Lord who else has the words of eternal life?
Verse 69
Peter proclaims that Jesus is the Son of the Living God.
Verse 70
Jesus even though He called all of the Twelve one of them has a devil in
