Notes on 1 Cor 11:14-34
CEV Scriptures marked as “(CEV)” are taken from
the Contemporary English Version © 1995 by American Bible Society.
Used by permission.
Before most have read this far they
have formed an opinion about the use of CEV and that I am attacking the
KJV. That is not intended. Never limit the ways For God’s word to bless
your life.
Never limit the ways or means of reaching the lost of this world.
The most important document in History of the
English language is the King James Version of the word of God. Remember
it is only a translation. Never in the word of God does the word of God
say that the KJV is inspired of God. That is God breathed, only the original
is.
The KJV form is so great that many translators
have attempted in some manner to retain the form of the KJV. The translators
of the Contemporary English Version sought to capture the spirit of the
King James Version.
“This is the word of God which we translate”. The KJV is only
a translation.
That being Trust, The Accuracy, beauty,
clarity, and dignity are all in order.
Today more hear the Bible read aloud than
read it for themselves! A contemporary translation must be a text that
an inexperience reader can read aloud without stumbling, that someone unfamiliar
with traditional biblical terminology can hear without misunderstanding,
and that everyone can listen
to with enjoyment because the style is lucid and lyrical.
In Poetry the appearance of the text on the page
is important.
The translators of the King James
Version said,”…variety of translations is profitable for the finding out
of the sense of the Scriptures” and “ We affirm and avow that the meanest
translation of the bible in English, set forth by men of our profession…contains
the Word of God, nay is the Word of God”. They even Stated, ”No cause therefore
why the Word translated should be denied to be the Word, or forbidden to
be current, notwithstanding that some imperfections and blemishes may be
noted in setting forth of it.”
The above was taken from the Preface of the Contemporary English
Version.
The CEV is used here as only a tool to study the bible.
How many Readers of the KJV have read about the
translators in the front section of their copy of
The bible. All other books in the English language we read the preface
and introduction to better understand the works. God word is very important.
If one limits the translations they are to study
then that one can become like the one that held the bible from the
eyes of the masses.
Introduction:
Although this letter is called the
first letter to the Corinthians, it is not really the first one Paul
wrote to the church at Corinth. 1
Cor 5:9
1 Cor 5:9 CEV In my other letter I told you not to have anything
to do with immoral people.
The Christian had also written to Paul 1
Cor 7:1
1 Cor 7:1 CEV Now I will answer the questions that you asked in your
letter. You
asked, “Is it best for people not to marry?”
Corinth is a large port city in southern Greece.
Paul began this work there in a Jewish meeting
place later next door to the home of a Gentile. Acts
18:1-17.
Most of the believers in Corinth were underprivileged people. 1
Cor 1:26-29. and some were wealthy.
1 Cor 11:18-22 .
One was the city treasure Acts 18:3; 1 Cor
4:12; 1 Cor 9:1-18
Paul was in particular troubled about the
way the Christians at Corinth were always quarrelling and separating themselves
into groups 1 Cor 1:10-4:21 and their treatment of others. 1
Cor 5:1-6:20
Paul tells them that love is the indispensable
thing Romans 5:8.
1 Cor 11:14-34
1 Cor 11:14 CEV Isn’t it unnatural and disgraceful
for men to have long hair?
1 Cor 11:14 KJV Doth not even nature
itself teach you, that, if a man have long hair, it is a shame
unto him?
Fact:
1.This requires no comment. What does it say in any translation?
What is Long hair?
1 Cor 11:15 CEV But long hair is a beautiful
way for a woman to cover her head.
1 Cor 11:15 KJV But if a woman have
long hair, it is a glory to her: for her hair is given her for a
Covering.
Facts:
1. If. The KJV puts an emphasizes on
If.
2. The Bible says the rest.
1 Cor 11:16 CEV This is how things are
done in all of God’s churches, and that’s why none of you
should argue about what I have said.
Facts:
1. Paul has set forth some rules of conduct and dress that needed to be
changed.
He proceeds to lay down the rules of the Lord’s Supper.
This man, a man chosen by Christ began where every bible study should start
God’s plan of salvation. Is it man’s or God’s plan?
Yes God designed the salvation of man’s soul.
Eph 2:8 CEV You were saved by faith in God, who treats us much better
than we deserve.
This is God's gift to you, and not anything you have done on your own.
It isn't something you have earned, so there is nothing you can brag about
( blow your own horn ).
God intended for us to do good things and to live as he has always wanted
us to
live. That's why he sent Christ to make us what we are.
This leaves out Good works. Church membership, Baptism, or Lord’s Supper.
hese are things one could sing your own praises about.
2. He explains that they are not difference from the other churches, all
churches do
it the same way.
3. Further Paul states that if they think Paul is telling them his own
idea none of the
other do it this way.
1 Cor 11:17 CEV Your worship services do you
more harm than good. I am certainly not going to
praise you for this.
Facts:
1.There is a right way to worship. From the heart. It includes Love.
1 John 4:8 CEV God is love, and anyone
who doesn’t love others has never known him.
1 John 4:8 KJV He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.
2. Paul is not going to praise them for the damage they are causing
3.The KJV states that they had knowing came together for the worse.
4. A Christian’s attitude and character can lead a person to Christ or
it can lead
them away. Many young Christian are not in a Church because of the way
the
church members act. Pastors are included in this. This Church member and
Pastor
say that those are push Christians. You have to push start them.
Well that is the churches job too encourage them to fellowship.
They are Pastors of a flock. Mat 10:42; Mat 18:5-6;
Mat 18.12; Mark 9:37.
Some Christian still need the milk. As fellow believer we are to care for
and
murture them along. Not to cast them aside because they take up too much
of
your time. 1 Cor 3:2; 1 Cor 9:7; Heb 9:12-13; 1 Peter
2:2.
How many Pastors know where the people in regular attendance live,
if they don’t know and never visited in their home, do they have their
home
phone numbers?
John 13:34-35 CEV A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love
one
another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.
35 CEV By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye
have love one to
another.
1 Cor 11:18 CEV I am told that you can’t
get along with each other when you worship, and I am sure
that some of what I have heard is true.
Facts:
1. If churches ( believers ) aren’t grounded ( trained ) in the Doctrine
of God’s
Word there will be divisions with in the churches.
In other words they could not get along. Paul knew them, so he let them
know
he believes what he had heard about them was true or accurate.
2. They seem to be gathering for communion services for the incorrect motive.
3. Paul tells them that he is starting with first problem they have.Which
has been
reported to him.
1 Cor 11:19 CEV You are bound to argue
with each other, but it is easy to see which of you have
God’s approval.
Facts:
1. Pride in being right keeps one from being right. This day and time the
following
words are not poplar. In order to learn from God we must be open to the
Holy Ghost ( Spirit ). Each believer must try the Spirits. 1
John 4:1.
Many churches have not tried the Spirits allowing these evil spirits to
lead members
astray. This is the reason the church should go after theses
“PUSH CHRISTIANS.”
2. For example many churches dictate what version of the Bible the members
should read I am not talking about using a certian version on the pulpit
and in
bible study ( everyone on the same page so to speek). Again there should
be
liberty in the Spirit. By Limiting the use of only one version they diminish
the
power of God. The believers mess things up when they try to order,
instead of letting God do his mighty work.
3. Christianity is a religion of Choice. The Spirit
of Liberty.
James 1:25; James 2:12
One is not forced to accept Christ. It is to be made of a free choice about
God’s
Salvation of their Soul. The only condition of our Salvation is accepting
God Gift
of His son Jesus. Romans 6:23.
Romans 6:23 CEV
Sin pays off with death. But God's gift is eternal life given
by Jesus Christ our Lord.
If God through His son Purchased our Salvation, God is able to maintain
that
which we have dedicated to Him.
Romans 4:21 CEV And being fully persuaded
that, what he had promised, he was able also
to perform.
Romans 8:36 CEV It is exactly as the Scriptures say, "For you
we face death all day long.
We are like sheep on their way to be butchered."
37 In everything we have won more than a victory because of Christ
who loves us.
38 I am sure that nothing can separate us from God's love--not life or
death, not
angels or spirits, not the present or the future, and not powers
above or
powers below. Nothing in all creation can separate us from
God's love for
us in Christ Jesus our Lord!
2 Cor 1:22; Eph 1:13
Eph 4:30 CEV Don't make God's Spirit sad. The Spirit makes you sure that
someday you
will be free from your sins.
4. When the mind and Spirit is closed to the knowledge God provides for
the
believers heresies be come doctrine. Not God’s but mans doctrine ( false
Doctrine ). So called Great leaders due to position and gaining position,
have
gone along with what the religion is teaching in their schools. Have they
ever
searched the answers themselves?
The believer is instructed to Study God’s Word. 2
Tim 2:15-16. Remember
the Old Testament was the only word they had at that time of this verse,
plus
what Jesus had taught them, and the Holy Ghost.
John 14:25 CEV
I have told you these things while I am still with you. But the Holy
Spirit will come and help you,
because the Father will send the Spirit to take my place. The Spirit
will teach you everything
and will remind you of what I said while I was with you.
5. If for any reason these leaders have a fear of being wrong he always
set out to
prove himself right when they are wrong. Pharisees and Sadducees,
they are
modern day. Mat 3:7; Mat 16:1-12; Acts 5:17
1 Cor 11:20-22 CEV
1 Cor 11:20 CEV When you meet together,
you don’t really celebrate the Lord’s Supper.
1 Cor 11:21 CEV You even start eating
before everyone gets to the meeting, and some of you go
hungry, while others get drunk.
1 Cor 11:22 CEV Don’t you have homes
where you can eat and drink? Do you hate God’s church?
Do you want to embarrass people who don’t have anything? What can I say
to you?
I certainly cannot praise you.
Fact:
1. It is believed the believers observed the Lord's on the first day of
the week
and at night.
Supper = [Grk. 1173] deipnon (dipe'-non)
from the same as 1160; dinner, i.e. the chief meal (usually in the evening):--feast,
supper.
2. What I am about to say may turn off allot of people. Preachers have
always tried
to say when wine is mentioned in the Bible it is just grape juice. The
none Alcoholic
kind.
Remember:
There was no ice then.
No pasteurization.
If it was not wine, how did they get drunk?
Eph 5:18 CEV Don't destroy yourself
by getting drunk, but let the Spirit fill your life.
WINE, n. [Gr.]
1a. The fermented juice of grapes; as the wine of the Madeira grape;
the wine of Burgundy or Oporto.
2a. The juice of certain fruits, prepared with sugar, spirits,
&c.; as currant wine;
gooseberry wine.
3a. Intoxication.
Noah awoke from his wine. Gen 9.
4a. Drinking.
They that tarry long at the wine. Prov 23.
Corn and wine, in Scripture, are put for all kinds of necessaries for subsistence.
Psalm.
Bread and wine, in the Lord’s Supper,
are symbols of the body and blood of Christ
Noah Webster's 1828 Dictionary of American English.
3. The Lord’s Supper was not meant to be observed as a feast. It is to
be partaken
of in remembrance . The memorial of Christ’s death, burial, resurrection,
and
ascending to Heaven to be at the Father’s right hand. That is the Gospel.
4. They were letting their position in life show. They started eating before
the have
nots could get there. Some appear to have brought their own food.
This home
food was not shared with the have nots. The members of the church is to
respect
all believers the same. James 2:3-4; 1 Peter 1:17.
5. Paul asked the Corinthians if they had homes to eat and drink in.
The performance of the Corinthians was as if they hated God’s Church.
In the church we as believers are not to make uncomfortable believers that
are without. The believers are to have brotherly love toward each other.
John 13:34; Romans 12:10; 1 Thess 4:9; Heb 13:1.
The believer is not to cause his brother or sister in the Lord to stumble.
Romans 14:21.
6. They had not done anything Paul could praise them for. In fact he states
he is not
going to praise them for the way they were acting. If Paul could
find praise for
them for what they had done, what would God think? This has nothing to
do with
them losing God’s salvation of their soul.
Have you committed your soul to Christ?
1 Cor 3:15 CEV But if it is destroyed
by the fire, we will lose everything. Yet we ourselves will be saved,
like someone escaping from flames.
All of you surely know that you are God's temple and that his Spirit lives
in you.
Together you are God's holy temple, and God will destroy anyone who destroys
his temple.
1 Cor 11:23 CEV I have already told you
what the Lord Jesus did on the night he was betrayed.
And it came from the Lord himself. He took some bread in his hands.
Facts:
1. Paul states he has already told them the Lord what did on the night
before the
cross. Here Paul states that what he is telling them came from the Lord.
Many Scholars states that perhaps Paul only received this message only
as it
was handed down.
2. Paul says himself that his instruction came from the Lord.
Apostle at this time in history was someone that had been with Jesus Christ.
The Apostles had been trained by Jesus.
Majority of the English translation of the Holy Word states that Paul Received
it
from Jesus Christ Himself. The BBE translates it. Handed down, the rest
translates it received.
The word translated received. From
Strong’s.
[Grk. 3880] paralambano (par-al-am-ban'-o)
from 3844 and 2983; to receive near, i.e. associate with oneself (in any
familiar or
intimate act or relation); by analogy, to assume an office; figuratively,
to learn:--
receive, take (unto, with).
3. This first night of the upper room was on the night Christ was betrayed.
1 Cor 11:24 CEV Then after he had given
thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body, which is
given for you. Eat this and remember me.”
Facts:
1. In verse 23 Christ took some bread. Some
Translation say He broke it. They
must have shared the same loaf of bread. The bread is a symbolical of Christ
body that was given for us.
Isa 53:5 CEV He was wounded and crushed because of our sins; by taking
our punishment,
He made us completely well.
1 Peter 2:24 CEV Christ carried the burden of our sins. He was nailed
to the cross,
so that we would stop sinning and start living right. By his cuts and
bruises you are healed.
2. Christ told them to eat and remember. ( consume ). Too fill themselves,
digest
the memory or comprehend.
3. Some believe that the bread and blood become Christ. Notice Christ never
stated
this. Christ was present on the night of the Lord’s Supper in the upper
room.
It is a symbol for the to remembence of the work Christ performed for a
lost and
dying world. The Lost just has to accept this finished work as paying the
price of
their sin and sins.
Luke19:10 CEV The Son of Man came to look for and to save people who are
lost.
4. Some religions teach that Baptism and the Lord’s Supper helps one receive
Grace or more of it. Christ said it is finished. These two events, the
believer is
told to do to,show forth and remember what God did for the believer through
His
only born Son Jesus Christ.
Mat 1:23 CEV "A virgin will have a baby boy, and he will be called
Immanuel,"
which means "God is with us."
John 19:30 CEV After Jesus drank the wine, he said, "Everything is
done!" He
bowed his head and died.
John 19:30 KJV When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said,
It is
finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.
No matter which translation one follows Christ gave all no one took anything
from Christ. Christ completely bought and paid once and for all the salvation
of
each believer's soul.
In the salvation of our Soul from Hell ( the lake of Fire, everlasting
fire ).
Heb 12:29; Rev 20:14-15; Rev 21:8.
The big question is who does the saving of our soul? God or Man? If God
does the saving of ones soul for everlasting, then God is powerful enough
to
save for everlasting, eternal and to the uttermost.
Heb 7:25 CEV He is forever able to save the people he leads to God,
because he
always lives to speak to God for them.
If God through His son Jesus Christ gives freely ( at no cost to the believer)
to the believer everlasting life then God is powerfully sufficient to maintain
what
Christ has bought with His blood. John 3:16-18; John
10:25-30; 1 John 5:7-15.
Heb 9:22
Heb 9:22 CEV The Law says that almost everything must be sprinkled
with blood,
and no sins can be forgiven unless blood is offered.
During the Passover the officales didn't want any one hanging on the cross
alive for the duration of the Passover. The cross with the out stretch
hands made it
unbrearable to breath., if one could use their legs to raise up they would
be able to
take a breathe allowing them too live longer. If their legs were broken
they would
depart this life from lack of oxygen. John 19:30-37.
Jesus' legs were never broken.
Bones Exodus 12:46; NU 9:12; Psalm 22:14; Psalm 34:20; Psalm 35:10
Pierced Psalm 22:16-17; Zec 12:10; Rev 1:7
As for the two translations, one saying wine and the other vinegar.
Wine or Vinegar = oxos [Grk. 3690] oxos (oz-os)
from 3691; vinegar, i.e. sour wine:--vinegar.
There is a red vinegar and a white vinegar. Vinegar is wine that is old
or
fermented pass it time. Vinegar is made from wine.
A better Translation would be bitter or sour wine.
Generally vinegar no one likes to drink. Christ takes what no one else
wants.
5. Some ancient manuscripts the broken bread would read given. Yes Christ
gave
His life that we might have eternal life. 1 John
5:13
1 John 5:11 CEV God has also said that
he gave us eternal life and that this
life comes to us from his Son.
12 And so, if we have God's Son, we have this life. But if we don't
have the Son,
we don't have this life.
13 All of you have faith in the Son of God, and I have written to let
you know
that you have eternal life.
John tells us that Past tense he gave
us eternal life.
John tells us that life is Present tense in His son. ( Jesus Christ
).
John tells the way of Salvation, in Jesus Christ, he tells the believers
that
are saved they can know that they have ( present tense ) eternal
Life.
If God gives the believer eternal life how can the believer lose it?
It would not be everlasting, eternal, or forever if one could lose it.
CP John 3:34; John 17:4; Romans 10:4; Gal 3:13; Heb
10:5-10.
6. The bread was unleavened meaning the lamb without spot or blemish
The Lamb of God. Bread resprents the body of Christ.
Leaven = Sin in the Bible
1 Peter 1:19 CEV You were rescued by the precious blood of Christ,
that
spotless and innocent lamb.
Christ’s body and His suffering covers our healing. The whippings Christ
received. Isa 53:5-6;1 Peter 2:24
1 Peter 2:24 CEV Christ carried the burden of our sins. He was nailed to
the cross,
so that we would stop sinning and start living right.
His cuts and bruises heal you.
7. To eat and commit to memory, we are to become one in Christ
1 Cor 11:25 CEV After the meal, Jesus took
a cup of wine in his hands and said, “This is my blood,
and with it God makes his new agreement with you. Drink this and remember
me.”
Facts:
1. After the bread Jesus took the cup of wine. KJV only says cup.
2. Accounts in Mat 26:29; Mark 14:25; Luke 22:18
quotes Jesus calling it "The
Fruit of the Vine." Remember they had no refrigeration or no pasteurizing
to
kept the juices from fermenting. Grapes have their own sugar.
For more information on wine see the following:
1869 Dr. Thomas Bramwell Welch, a physician and dentist by profession,
successfully pasteurizes Concord grape juice to produce an
"unfermented sacramental wine" for fellow parishioners at his church
in
Vineland, where he is communion steward. His achievement marks the
beginning of the processed fruit juice industry.
This is the start of Welch’s Grape juice.
http://www.welchs.com/company/company_history.html
Until then all juices fermented.
3. The wine symbolizes the blood of Jesus. The wine is alive ever growing.
The blood of Jesus Christ is alive ever saving and keeping. Yes Jesus is
alive.
Heb 7:26 CEV Jesus is the high priest we need. He is holy and innocent
and faultless,
and not at all like us sinners. Jesus is honored above all beings
in heaven,
27 and he is better than any other high priest. Jesus doesn't need
to offer sacrifices
each day for his own sins and then for the sins of the people. He
offered a
sacrifice once for all, when he gave himself.
4. God used the Lord’s Supper to make a new everlasting testament ( covenant
)
by the blood of Jesus Christ.
5. Again we are told to take it into our being and everytime we partake
we are
to remember Christ work, the Gospel.
6. In the Bible as a thing is repeated, it shows the importance of the
subject.
7. The salvation of the believers soul from the torment of The lake of
fire forever,
is a finished work of Christ on the cross. 1 Peter
1:5 Only God not man has the
power to keep and save through faith. The believer only once has to realize
the need and accept Christ finished work. Eph 2:8-9
1 Peter 1:25 God’s word endureth perpetually.
The word is eternal John 1:1-2
1 Cor 11:26 CEV The Lord meant that when
you eat this bread and drink from this cup, you tell about
his death until he Comes.
Facts:
1. Christ did not give the believers a set time for the observance of the
Lord’s Supper.
He told them ust do until Christ comes again the second coming.
There will certainly be a rapture
One would hate to be left behind.
2. Christ is coming back
Acts 1:11; 1 Thess 1:10; 1 Thess 4:16; 1 Thess 4:23.
3. The New Testament church in Jerusalem observed the Lord’s supper on
the First
day of the week, every week. First day of week shows a new beginning in
Jesus Christ.
2 Cor 5:17 CEV
Anyone who belongs to Christ is a new person. The past is forgotten, and
everything is new.
Acts 20:7-8
1 Cor 11:27 CEV But if you eat the bread
and drink the wine in a way that isn’t worthy of the Lord,
you sin against his body and blood.
Facts:
1. To interfere with a believer that’s wants to partake of the Lord’s Supper
is a
dangerous thing to do. Many Churches have closed communion. The church
was never to judgment fellow believers in regards to taking the Lord’s
supper.
The Lord's Supper is a personal matter between the believer and God.
2. Paul says it is a sin if we look at or partake of the Supper wrongly.
Jesus gave this commandment to his Disciples in the upper room. Tradition
has the believers doing it in the churches. Any member of Christ’s church
the bride of Christ, the body as Christ is the head is the church..
3. Paul tells us there is a right attitude in taking the Lord’s supper.
Taking it for
the incorrect motive is a sin. If is a way of remembering The sacrifice
God gave
in His son.
What Jesus Christ did for us and how is because He loved us first. Roman
5:8.
Christ was Him that knew no sin.
4. There is a way that isn’t acceptable to the Lord and puts to dishonor
the work
of Jesus Christ.
1 Cor 11:28 CEV That’s why you must examine
the way you eat and drink.
Facts:
1. The believer must examine themselves.
2. The Lord’s supper is for all believers, that is why it is called communion.
3. There is a danger in forbidden a believer from partaking in the Lord’s
Supper.
Mat 18:6 CEV It will be terrible for people who cause
even one of my little
followers to sin. Those people would be better off thrown into the into
the deepest
part of the ocean with a heavy stone tied around their necks!
7. The world is in for trouble because of the way
it causes people to sin.
There will always be something to cause people to sin, but anyone
who does this will be in for trouble.
4. The Lord’s Supper is Christ’s way of drawing the church closer. Paul
also knew
that if they truly understood the Gospel it would end lots of the churches
problem.
5. Apparently the have and have nots did not wait on each other. In the
Corinthians
church there was Jews, Gentiles, rich, poor, free and slave. The members
of the
Lord’s church are the bride of Christ, the body of Christ. Each member
is as
important as the other. 1 Cor 12:1-31; James 4:6
1 Cor 11:29 CEV If you fail to understand that
you are the body of the Lord, you will Condemn
yourselves by the way you eat and drink.
Facts:
1. The believers are too understand they are the body of Christ our Lord.
Christ
is the head of the body.
2. The church represents Christ. If the world looks at a believer that
has made
Jesus Christ Lord and master. The world should see Christ. Christian first
call
Christians at Antioch because they lived a Christ like life.
3. If one eats the Supper just to feed themselves that is wrong and a sin.
There is nothing wrong with fellowship The Bible God's word tells the believers
to Fellowship. Heb 10:25.
4 . One can cause God to condemn them by the way you eat and drink the
Lord’s
