Notes on 1 Cor 9:18-27

Introduction: The ones that advocate a person can lose their salvation ( the salvation God has given them by
His Unmerited Grace ), use theses verses as their proof. Clarence Larkin uses the phrase “rightly dividing the
word of Truth,” in fact he wrote a book about rightly dividing the word. God’s word is special many actually
don’t believe it is God’s word, they use it to take it apart here and there to make the word seem to say what
they want it to say. Beware of people that want you to stay with only one translation.
What we have is only a translation equivalent to a commentary or a preacher’s sermon.
Never take a verse by it’s self, always read before and afterwards to bring the verses into context.
Next one needs to run the chain reference to see what is said about the subject in other parts of God’s word.
If one starts at verse one of Chapter nine of first Corinthians, Paul tells where his authority and calling as an apostle comes from.
He proceeds to tell his readers that he has seen the Lord. Acts 9:1-9. Cp Acts 1:21-22.
To be an apostle one had to be a witness of Christ’s resurrection. Acts 22:6-16; Acts 26:12-18.
  1 Cor 15:8; Acts 9:17, Acts 9:27; Acts 10:41; Acts 18:9; Acts 22:14, Acts 22:17  Cp 2 Cor 12:1.
The fact that they have been lead to faith in the Lord by Paul’s leadership should be proof.
Begin with verse 7 and ending in verse 18, Paul starts to tell how he plants and what he plants.
Every person that is saved is called to spread the Gospel 1 Cor 15:1-11; John 14:6; John 3:16.
Paul’s greatest desire is that through him the world might be saved by faith in Christ Jesus.
He, Paul is the apostle to the Gentile Romans 11:13. If one person had not sowed the Gospel Hundreds of years
you might not be hearing the saving Gospel today. If you are saved it may be God’s use of someone years ago, even before you were born.
As part of that desire Paul wants for him or other Christian to refrain from any thing that would cause a brother
or sister in the Lord to stumble ( he is not talking about Salvation but the joy and blessing of the salvation of
their soul. ) Romans 14:13, 21. The great impairment that is caused today is by a Christian not showing love.
The Sunday morning Christian hurts the cause of the Lord greatly.
There is a time to speak and a time to be quiet.
Ecc 3:6 CEV There is a time for finding and losing, keeping and giving,
7  for tearing and sewing, listening and speaking.
8  There is also a time for love and hate, for war and peace.

Our Goal should be what ever it takes to get someone saved we should do it if it is right.
Paul points in verses 7-18 that if you preach it then you should be living by it.  Many a pastor and deacons quit visiting a past member if they leave their church. They should stay in contract with them. If you don’t reach out
and touch them how can God ever use you to bless these people?
A Christian should perform what they preach. Many leaders like being leaders. Not all but a lot of church
leaders today become like the religious leaders of Christ time worried more about losing their position than
proclaiming the Gospel. Mat 3:7; Mat 5:20.
If you are saved, all things you do should Glorify Christ not you.
    About translations.
It is a shame that Christians as a whole don’t study themselves. We as saved followers of Christ are told
to search the scriptures. John 5:39; Acts 17:11. A Student of God's word has to do research.
God’s word is God’s revelation about Himself to man. What many students of the bible don’t take into account
is when God inspired the writer to write, when, to whom, and about what he had them to pen.
In reality we have translations of God’s words written in the orient.
Our task as children of God is to apply those teaching to a dying work in a way that they accept Christ as
Saviour.  God word has not changed. God has provided us with written insights of God’s great men.
There are translations, commentaries, sermons, and many other study aids. The word of God could be expressed
and not man seeking God but “ God seeking man .”
“ It is not gained by human powers of perception, but is a divine gift”.

If you listen to a preacher preach or a teacher teach, what is the difference between that and reading a translation or commentary. Beware of someone trying to take away your Christian liberty and Christian joy
through men of the ages. Their insight can prove of value.
Ask for the leading of the Lord through His Spirit in the study of God’s word.
    Study God’s word.
2 Tim 2:15   CEV  Do your best to win God’s approval as a worker who doesn’t need to be ashamed
and who teaches only the true message.

Bible in Basic English 2 Timothy 2:15
Let it be your care to get the approval of God, as a workman who has no cause for shame,
giving the true word in the right way.
To understand and Keep in context we are starting our study at verse 18-27.
Paul is here explaining both the method and reward of a true ministry.

2 Cor 4:4- 7 CEV  The god who rules this world has blinded the minds of unbelievers.
They cannot see the light, which is the good news about our glorious Christ,
who shows what God is like.
5  We are not preaching about ourselves. Our message is that Jesus Christ is Lord.
He also sent us to be your servants.
6  The Scriptures say, “God commanded light to shine in the dark.”
Now God is shining in our hearts to let you know that his glory is seen in Jesus Christ.
7  We are like clay jars in which this treasure is stored. The real power comes from God and not from us.

1 Cor 9:17-18  If I preach because I want to, I will be paid. But even if I don't want to, it is still  something God has  sent me to do.
18  What pay am I given? It is the chance to preach the good news free of charge and not  to use the privileges that are mine
                                 because I am a preacher.
                       Notes:
                       1. Paul preached because God sent him to preach.
                       2. Many preached for money, Paul preached free of Charge.
                       3. He didn’t preach for money or privileges.
1 Cor 9:19  I am not anyone's slave. But I have become a slave to everyone, so that I can win as many people as possible.
                    Notes:
                    1. Paul is not a slave to anyone.
                    2. He is willing to become a slave to everyone. So he can win all he can to Christ.
                    3. Lesson: We should do all things in order to lead people to accepting Christ as saviour.

Paul sets the example. This Paul practiced what he preached.
If one is going to be a politician you have to spend a lifetime at campaigning.
Again you may not win. The same is in your Christian witness.

1 Cor 9:20  When I am with the Jews, I live like a Jew to win Jews. They are ruled by the Law of Moses, and I am not.
But I live by the Law to win them.
                    Notes:
                    1. To win the Jews Paul lived like the Jews to win them to Christ.
                    2. They are ruled by the Law of Moses.
                    3. Paul tells he is not under the Law of Moses but under the Liberty of Grace.
                    4. The KJV omits this clause, “not being myself under the law”, which appears in all important
                       Greek manuscripts.
New Scofield notes page 1241. Oxford University Press, New York
1 Cor 9:21  And when I am with people who are not ruled by the Law, I forget about the Law to win them. Of course,
I never really forget about the law of God. In fact, I am ruled by the law of Christ.
                    Notes:
                    1. Paul is all things to all people to win them to Christ.
                    2. There is a Law of God.
                    3. All born again Christians ( John 3:3 ) is ruled by the Law of Christ.
                            Gal 6:2; 2 John 1:6.
                         Under Grace.
Romans 6:14 CEV Don't let sin keep ruling your lives. You are ruled by God's kindness and not by the Law.
15  What does all this mean? Does it mean we are free to sin, because we are ruled by God's
wonderful kindness and not by the Law? Certainly not!
1 Cor 9:22  When I am with people whose faith is weak, I live as they do to win them. I do everything I can to win everyone I possibly can.
                    Notes:
                    1. The fact God inspired Paul to repeat a subject matter several times put the significance of the
area under discussion to higher status of importance.
                    2. Christ and Paul are examples of great teachers and preachers.
A1. They lived what they preached and taught.
A2. All things to win all people to Christ.
A3. Spoke with authority. The believer is given the power of Christ through the indwelling of
                                   God’s Spirit, the Comforter.
                                          John 14:16; John 14:26; John 15:26; John 16:7;
A4. They knew their message. Before you can witness to anyone you have to accept Christ as
your personal Saviour. You have to meet Christ Jesus personally.
It can not be by Baptism ( one goes in a dry sinner and comes out a wet sinner.)
Church membership doesn’t do it either. They are both Good righteous acts.
                                   Eph 2:6-10 CEV
                                               Eph 2:6 CEV
6 God raised us from death to life with Christ Jesus, and he has given us a place  beside Christ in heaven.
7  God did this so that in the future world he could show how truly good and kind he
is to us because of what Christ Jesus has done.
8  You were saved by faith in God, who treats us much better than we deserve.
This is God's gift to you, and not anything you have done on your own.
9  It isn't something you have earned, so there is nothing you can brag about.
10  God planned for us to do good things and to live as he has always wanted us to live.
That's why he sent Christ to make us what we are.
We are saved by the power of God John 1:12-13.
                                           John 1:12-13 CEV
John 1:12 CEV Yet some people accepted him and put their faith in him. So he gave them the
right to be the children of God.
13  They were not God's children by nature or because of any human desires.
God himself was the one who made them his children.
The right equals the Power. God Himself made them His.
Again church going, doing good, church membership, and righteous acts
don’t saved. The believer does them because they are saved by the Grace
                                                          of God through Faith.
You can only follow Christ teachings to baptize believers scripturally.
Many churches before you can be a member of the local church have to be
baptized. But the bible says nothing about baptizing a believer into any
church ( the Bride of Christ ). God does the adding into His church.
                                                            Acts 2:21, 47

A5. Paul repeated his subject in a way the made it clearer and clearer.
                      3. Paul is trying to get them to see what he is preaching. They see him living it.
                      4. In being all things he is not talking about partaking of sinful acts.
                                                     2 Cor 6:14 CEV
2 Cor 6:14  CEV Stay away from people who are not followers of the Lord!
Can someone who is good get along with someone who is evil?
Are light and darkness the same?
                   5.  Our understanding of God is liken to the universe. We can only experience it from with in.
To really see it we would have to be outside of the universe. One go to the farthest place
in the universe but you are still inside. You can only see a part that is the most we can see.
The view from where we are standing. We can never see the whole from the inside.

With God we would have to be above God. See him from the outside. We only see the
part He has revealed to us. Many people today think they are Greater than God and don’t
need Him. They will not accept His Son. The believer can only know God from within.
                              1 Cor 2:14-16
John 3:14  CEV And the Son of Man must be lifted up, just as that metal snake was lifted up by Moses in the desert.
15  Then everyone who has faith in the Son of Man will have eternal life.
16  God loved the people of this world so much that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who has faith in him
will have eternal life and never really die.
17  God did not send his Son into the world to condemn its people. He sent him to save them!
18  No one who has faith in God's Son will be condemned. But everyone who doesn't have faith in him
has already been condemned for not having faith in God's only Son.

These verses tell that Faith is what saves. Faith in v. 15, v. 16, v. 18
Verse 18 states no one who has faith in God’s son will be condemned.
As some people stress that Baptism is part of Salvation why is that left
                                                       out if it is important.
Let us look at another Translation of v. 18.
                                                         John 3:18 BBE The man who has faith in him does not come up to be judged;
but he who has no faith in him has been judged even now,
because he has no faith in the name of the only Son of God.
This is so important we are going to look at some other translation.
                                                       [King James Version] (John 3:18)
He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already,
because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

[Webster's Revised King James Version] (John 3:18)
He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned
already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

                                                    [American Standard Version] (John 3:18)
He that believeth on him is not judged: he that believeth not hath been judged already,
because he hath not believed on the name of the only begotten Son of God.

                                                      [Darby's Translation] (John 3:18)
He that believes on him is not judged: but he that believes not has been already judged,
because he has not believed on the name of the only-begotten Son of God.

                                                      [Young's Literal Translation] (John 3:18)
he who is believing in him is not judged, but he who is not believing hath been judged already,
because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

The people that advocate that God did His part now man has to do his part need to
understand that God through the work of His son does the saving.
If a person is not condemned that believes in Christ Jesus and believes that
He is God’s son. The bible says they are not condemned or judged. It left out Baptism.
If a soul only believes what happen to the words baptism. They are missing in this text.
Without the mention of Baptism, believing, and faith is the only way mentioned as a
way to keep from being condemned.

                                            John 14:6 CEV
"I am the way, the truth, and the life!" Jesus answered. "Without me, no one can go to the Father."

                                              1 John 5:8-14.
One doesn’t have to comprehend all about God to be saved.
Just realize you need Him to save you soul and accept that He can and will save and
                                             keep you soul.
2 Tim 1:12; Eph 4:30. God has sealed you the instant you are saved.
1 Cor 9:23  I do all this for the good news, because I want to share in its blessings.
                    Notes:
                    1. Good news equals the Gospel.
                    2. Paul does this to spread the Gospel.
                    3. Why does he do it?
He wants to share in the blessings one receives in spreading the Gospel.
Every time you allow God to use you, one receives a blessing.
1 Cor 9:24  You know that many runners enter a race, and only one of them wins the prize. So run to win!
                    Notes:
                    1.  The Roman Empire is where the Olympics started.
The athletes worked hard. It is a period of a lifetime for some. This for a crown That fades
a way. Some today work for Four years or more.
                   2. Not only the practice but also the money to get to the games, to live on while they practice.
                   3. Many runners enter a race but only one wins the prize.
                   4. Lesson: Run as if there was only one prize.
The work for the Lord should be with that same degree of discipline.
                   5. This takes determination, a vision of the prize, a stick to it a ness. Every Christian as they study
God’s word, God will reveal to them the Future with the Lord through His word.
1 Cor 9:25  Athletes work hard to win a crown that cannot last, but we do it for a crown that will last forever.
                    Notes:
                    1. The crown, they the athletes work for will fade away with corruption. It just won’t last.
But the one a true believer will receive will last and last forever.
                        Crowns:
                             1 Peter 5:4; 1 Cor 9:25; Philip 4:1; 1 Thess 2:19; 2 Tim 4:8; James 1:12; Rev 2:10.
                         Rewards:
                             Mat 5:12; Mat 6:4; Mat 10:41-42; Mat 16:27; Mark 9:41; Luke 6:23, 35; Romans 4:4;
                             1 Cor 3:8; Col 3:24; 1 Tim 5:18; Heb 11:6; 2 John 1:8; Rev 11:18; Rev 22:12.
Yes your salvation if it is of the Lord is secure. There is a difference in Crowns and rewards
                          and salvation.
                     2. Paul is talking about Crowns ( rewards for a job well done. ) Mat 25:21,23.
He is not talking about salvation. It is secure God does the saving and the keeping.
John 10:27 CEV My sheep know my voice, and I know them. They follow me,
28  and I give them eternal life, so that they will never be lost.
No one can snatch them out of my hand.
29  My Father gave them to me, and he is greater than all others.
No one can snatch them from his hands,
30  and I am one with the Father.
                     3. Paul knew who has his soul. 2 Tim 1:12.
1 Cor 9:26-27  I don't run without a goal. And I don't box by beating my fists in the air.
27  I keep my body under control and make it my slave,  so I won't lose out after telling the good news to others.
                         Notes:
                         1. Paul says believers need a goal.
                         2. If we don’t have goals in life it is like boxing in the air. Shadow boxing.
                         3. I love to expound on God’s word. I know preachers that love to preach.
If you love the Lord and love talking about Him, if you love witnessing we have to keep our
bodies under control, make it your slave. Paul is doing this so he want lose a chance to spread
                                the Gospel.
In verse 27 the KJV uses the word castaway.
Castaway  “Castaway” is translated from the Gk. adokimos, meaning disapproved.
Dokimos, without the negating a, is rendered “approved” in
                                  Rom 14:18; 16:10; 1 Cor 11:19; 2 Cor 10:18; 2 Tim 2:15; and, in James 1:12,
                                 “tried.”
The prefix simply changes the word to a negative, i.e. not approved, or
disapproved. The apostle is writing of service, not of salvation. He is not expressing fear
that he may fail of salvation but of his crown.
                                  ( Dan 12:3; 1 Cor 3:14 ).

We must remember the human body is of no good. it is full of lust, evil, passion, and flesh appetites.
For a good Christian witness it must be kept under control. Many a man has become a castaway even after
having preached to others. The word translated "castaway" means rejected, useless, of no value.
The worse thing that can happen to a Christian is to lose their power of witness. lots of people have been used
of God, but through one evil deed lose it all and become useless. A witness must know where he stands with God.
2 Tim 1:12 CEV And for which I undergo these things: but I have no feeling of shame. For I have knowledge of him in whom I have faith,
and I am certain that he is able to keep that which I have given into his care till that day.

“ The Gospel is not a truth among other truths, rather it set a question-mark against all truths”
Karl Barth, “The epistle to the Romans, trans. By Edwyn C. Hoskyns ( London: Oxford University Press, 1968), 35

“ Revelation is therefore the initiative of God, not the conclusion of human experience.”

Salvation of our soul involves the term redeemed. That is what salvation by God through Christ is.
Redeeming man’s soul along with all creation. Romans 8:22.
Redeemed: the word of God shows the picture of redemption, From the First verse to the Last.
In Gen 1:1-2 the world is in a lost state.  A lost soul is with out form and is in a state of chaos.
In verse 1:2 the Holy Spirit starts it work of redemption, sin ruin everything.
Just as what happens in the salvation of a person’s soul the Spirit moves up on the impossible.
Making a new creature.
2 Cor 5:17 CEV Anyone who belongs to Christ is a new person. The past is forgotten, and everything is new.
18  God has done it all! He sent Christ to make peace between himself and us,
and he has given us the work of making peace between himself and others.
The creation people don’t hold to the following theory. They do not take into account that something happen before verse 2. With God everything He created was perfect. Would a perfect God create any thing imperfect, it just is not in God’s nature? Sin corrupts everything.
  Cp Isa. 14:4-23;  Rev 20:10; Eze 28:11-19.
The Devil Did Good until he decided, made a choice to be like the most High, to be above God.

Eze 28:15 CEV You were truly good from the time of your birth, but later you started doing wicked things.
                                             Isa 14:12 CEV You, the bright morning star, have fallen from the sky! You brought down other nations;
                                                                       now you are brought down.
13  You said to yourself, "I'll climb to heaven and place my throne above the highest stars.
I'll sit there with the gods far away in the north.
14  I'll be above the clouds, just like God Most High."
Jude 1:6  CEV You also know about the angels who didn't do their work and left their proper places.
God chained them with everlasting chains and is now keeping them in dark pits until the great
                                                                  day of judgment.
                                            They left their fist estate.
Redeemed has the root idea of the transfer of ownership between two people by or through the payment of an acceptable price or substituting something of equal value.
If you are not saved please accept Christ as your redeemer simply by asking Him, Christ, to come into your heart and become both Lord and Master. Lord if I am going to make it to heaven and escape the fires of Hell
you are the only way.

Yes I am trying to scare you into being saved it is something to be afraid of. Where is your soul going to spend eternality. Heaven or Hell.

1Tim 2:4 CEV God wants everyone to be saved and to know the whole truth, which is,
5  There is only one God, and Christ Jesus is the only one who can bring us to God. Jesus was truly
human, and he gave himself to rescue all of us.
6  God showed us this at the right time.
7  This is why God chose me to be a preacher and an apostle of the good news. I am telling the truth.
I am not lying. God sent me to teach the Gentiles about faith and truth.
8  I want everyone everywhere to lift innocent hands toward heaven and pray, without being angry
                or arguing with each other.
