Notes on John 8:31-37; John
8:51-55
Introduction: The verses in question are John
8:31-32, 51-55. First in this study is to understand the words
Jesus is teaching. They are The Truth. The Truth Gives life. Theses
disciples were not saved.
In verse 32 Christ told them the truth shall make you free. If they
had been saved their souls would already
been free.
The Jews were looking for a material King.
There is a use of words the writer used at the inspiration
of God. 2 Tim 3:16. Most of the Followers
up to this time believed on him. People around the world believe
there
is a god. It is one thing to believe on Jesus and to believe
in
Jesus, to take Him into your heart. Their problem
is they had not the Holy Ghost dwelling in them . The Comforter
had not yet come.
Theses disciples were not saved. As we study our hope
is that you will take any preconceived ideas out of
you mind. That you will take an honest look making an informed decision.
A word about the use of Several translations.
They are all translated by men. The most widely read in the
history of the world is the KJV of 1769. If was ordered by
a person that was not religious. He picked seventy men
who were more scared of King James than scared of God.
They were paid by The King. If you listen to a preacher
or teachers teach, one is taking their word as correct,
Just remember they are only men.
Do you use any ones else's writings, they are
written by man some are more spirited that others. There are
authors which allowed the Holy Spirit more than others.
1 John 4:1
All translations have errors in them. God's original
word is infallible. 2 Tim 3:16.
we are commanded to Study for ourselves 2
Tim 2:15.
The student is held ultimately responsibly
for what the student believes. What they believe Determines
were one will spend eternality. Heaven or
Hell ( the lake of Fire ).
More explanation of the following Scriptures, follow
theses scriptures. A word about the use of Several translations. They are
all translated by men.

More Commentary after the verses.
John 8:31 KJVThen
said Jesus to those Jews which
believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then
are ye my disciples indeed;
32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall
make you free.
33 They answered him, We be Abraham's seed, and
were never in bondage to any man: how sayest
thou, Ye shall be made free?
34 Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto
you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin.
35 And the servant abideth not in the house
for ever: but the Son abideth ever.
36
If the Son therefore shall make you free,
ye shall be free indeed.
37 I know that ye are Abraham's seed; but ye seek
to kill me, because my word hath no place in you.
John 8:51 KJV
51
Verily, verily, I say unto you,
If a man keep my saying, he shall never see death.
52
Then said the Jews unto him, Now we know that
thou hast a devil. Abraham is dead, and the
prophets; and thou sayest, If a man keep my
saying, he shall never taste of death.
53
Art thou greater than our father Abraham, which is
dead? and the prophets are dead: whom makest thou thyself?
54
Jesus answered, If I honour myself, my honour is
nothing: it is my Father that honoureth me; of
whom ye say, that he is your God:
55
Yet ye have not known him; but I know him: and
if you should say, I know him not,
I shall be a liar like unto you: but I know him,
and keep his saying.

John 8:31-37,51 NIV
31 To the
Jews who had believed him, Jesus said,
"If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples.
32 Then you will know the truth, and the truth will
set you free."
33 They answered him, "We are Abraham's
descendants and have never been slaves of
anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?"
34 Jesus replied, "I tell you the truth, everyone
who sins is a slave to sin.
35 Now a slave has no permanent place in the
family, but a son belongs to it forever.
36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.
37 I know you are Abraham's descendants.
Yet you are ready to kill me,
because you have no room for my word.
John 8:51-55 NIV
51 I tell you the truth, if anyone keeps my word,
he will never see death."
52 At this the Jews exclaimed, "Now we know that
you are demon-possessed! Abraham died and
so did the prophets, yet you say that if anyone
keeps your word, he will never taste death.
53 Are you greater than our father Abraham?
He died, and so did the prophets.
Who do you think you are?"
54 Jesus replied, "If I glorify myself, my glory
means nothing. My Father, whom you claim
as your God, is the one who glorifies me.
55 Though you do not know him, I know him.
If I said I did not, I would be a liar like you,
but I do know him and keep his word.

John 8:31-55 CEV
31
Jesus told the people who had faith in him,
“If you keep on obeying what I have said,
you truly are my disciples.
32 You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
33 They answered, “We are Abraham’s children!
We have never been anyone’s slaves.
How can you say we will be set free?”
34 Jesus replied: I tell you for certain that
anyone who sins is a slave of sin!
35 And slaves don’t stay in the family forever,
though the Son will always remain in the family.
36 If the Son gives you freedom, you are free!
37 I know that you are from Abraham’s family.
Yet you want to kill me, because my message
isn’t really in your hearts.
38 I am telling you what my Father has shown me,
just as you are doing what your father has taught you.
John 8:51
51 I tell you for certain that if you obey my
words, you will never die.”
52 Then the people said, “Now we are sure that
you have a demon. Abraham is dead, and so
are the prophets. How can you say that no one
who obeys your words will ever die?
53 Are you greater than our father Abraham?
He died, and so did the prophets.
Who do you think you are?”
54 Jesus replied, “If I honored myself, it would
mean nothing. My Father is the one who
honors me. You claim that he is your God,
55 even though you don’t really know him.
If I said I didn’t know him, I would be a liar,
just like all of you. But I know him,
and I do what he says.

John 8:31-55 NLT
31
Jesus said to the people who believed in him,
“You are truly my disciples if you keep
obeying my teachings.
32 And you will know the truth, and the truth
will set you free.”
33 “But we are descendants of Abraham,” they
said. “We have never been slaves to
anyone on earth.
What do you mean, ‘set free’?”
34 Jesus replied, “I assure you that everyone
who sins is a slave of sin.
35 A slave is not a permanent member of the
family, but a son is part of the family forever.
36 So if the Son sets you free, you will indeed be free.
37 Yes, I realize that you are descendants of
Abraham. And yet some of you are trying
to kill me because my message does not
find a place in your hearts.
John 8:51
51 I assure you, anyone who obeys my
teaching will never die!”
52 The people said, “Now we know you are
possessed by a demon. Even Abraham
and the prophets died, but you say that
those who obey your teaching will never
die!
53 Are you greater than our father Abraham,
who died? Are you greater than the
prophets, who died? Who do you think
you are?”
54 Jesus answered, “If I am merely boasting
about myself, it doesn’t count. But it is my
Father who says these glorious things
about me. You say, ‘He is our God,’
55 but you do not even know him. I know him.
If I said otherwise, I would be as great a
liar as you! But it is true—I know him
and obey him.

As time goes on the Church will be usher in by the
Holy Ghost at the day of Pentecost.
Acts chapters 1 and 2. The Lord added to the Church. The Lords church.
Not the local Visible church.
He adds to the bride of Christ. The invisible
(spiritual) church started on the day of Pentecost (Acts
1:4-5, 8)
and will end at Christ second coming.
(Dan 7:13-14; Mat 24:30; Mat 25:31; Mark 13:26;
Luke 21:27; John 14:3; 1Thes 1:10; 1 Thess 4:16;
2 Thess 1:7-10; Rev 1:7 ). Cp Acts 1:11
In verse 32 Christ
tells them they will know the truth if they will just follow His words.
Christ goes on to tell
them this truth will make them free. Again still looking from
the material point of view his followers still missed
what Christ was telling . They had preconceived ideas. Many
souls today try to reason the spiritual things by
the material. 1 Cor 2:14; Jude 1:19;
John 6:45; 2 Cor 4:4-6; 1 John 2:20; 1 John 2:27; 1John 5:20.
[Bible in Basic English] (1 Corinthians 2:14)
For the natural man is not able to take in the things of the Spirit of
God:
for they seem foolish to him, and he is not able to have knowledge of them,
because such knowledge comes only through the Spirit.
Just because they were
descendants of Abraham’s the Jews believed they had all one needed. One
of the sad
thing is the spokesman for this group made a false statement
. He said the descendant’s of Abraham had never
been slaves. See not everyone speaking in the bible is telling
the truth. The nation had been in Egypt, at the
present time they were under the rule of the Romans. I agree
nothing in history has captured the Spirit of the
nation of Israel.
Jesus replied in a way as to not argue with them
over minor affairs, but went to the heart of the problem sin.
Many in the past and today fail to let God save their soul.
Lots remain unsaved because their minds are poisoned
by the teachings of man. The number one rule of bible study is to
read the passages.
Ever have trouble reading a sentence in life or reading a manual.
In the reading one may sometime have to read
the sentence several times in order to read it correctly. The reason
is the way we were taught.
Jesus not only saved our souls from Hell,
He saved the true believer from the bondage of sin.
Our Saviour saves one from the power of sin. Have you turned it
all over to Jesus? Is Christ your Lord and
Master? Is Jesus and his Father God powerful enough they can save
your soul? John 8:16; John 10:27-30.
Or do they lose their grip on your soul? If they can save your soul
they can keep it saved. 2 Tim 1:12; Heb 7:25.
When one accepts Christ finished work,
they are born into the family of God. Eph 3:14-15.
John 11:52; John 12:36; John 13:33; John 1:12.
A slave can be given their
freedom, sold, and ECT. The son of a family is a son or child Forever,
Everlasting, Eternal.
[Bible in Basic English] (John 8:36)
If then the son makes you free, you will be truly free.
In many countries of the world groups of factions are
at war because they are descendants of this person or
that person. It is so strong they are willing to fight for
their so called rights to the death.
The choice of accepting Christ as your personal saviour
is a choice the individual has to make themselves.
Your father or mother can only present the Gospel to you. That along
will not save your soul from the power of Sin.
You have to accept Christ as your personal saviour.
His work is the Good News. 1 Cor 15:1-11.
In verse 37 Jesus said you ( The Jews,
the disciples ) are ready to kill me.
The disciples (not the twelve) had no room for his words. The Gospel
didn’t even prick their hearts. Heb 4:12.
From here we skip to verses 51 . please
read the ones in between.
The Gospel was hidden to these because they were lost. Just because
one say they are saved doesn’t make it true.
2 Cor 4:3.
In the KJV Verily, verily, is repeated twice making this a subject
to be notice as important.
Jesus’ saying is the Gospel. John 14:6
[Bible in Basic English] (John 14:6)
Jesus said to him, I am the true and living way: no one comes to the Father
but by me.
There are only so many ways that
it can be said. The bible continues to say Jesus is the way.
It never says one needs to have water baptism to be saved. Water
is simply only a picture of the Gospel.
Verses 52 The Jews because of their
traditions which were taught by the leaders of their time had a closed
mind.
They even accused Christ of being demon-possessed. Jews even
today look upon Christ as a great teacher.
By this time the disciples had seen all of the works of God Jesus
had done, they should have known who He was.
These people acted as if they
knew God which in reality there was no knowledge in their hearts.
They were lost Bound for the Lake of Fire. Rev
19:20; Rev 20:10; Rev 20:14-15.
Bible in Basic English] (Revelation
20:15)
And if anyone's name was not in the book of life, he went down into the
sea of fire.
Before one can lose God’s Salvation
of their soul that have to be saved by God.
If God does the saving He is powerful enough to do the keeping.
Man is too sinful to have anything to do with his
Salvation of his soul. On the cross Christ gave His life they
did not take his life from Him.
God raised Christ from the dead. (John 4:34;
John 19:30). He walked on earth for about forty or more day
teaching His disciples. Acts 1:-5
On the day of Pentecost the Holy Ghost came. He brought all things
to remembrance.
The Lord added to the Church. Acts 1:8; Acts
2:1-4.
Smart men have trouble accepting Christ as saviour. Smart men are
not necessary wise.
Only a wise man or women gets saved.
[Bible in Basic English] (Romans 5:8)
5:8 But God has made clear his love to us, in that, when we were
still sinners, Christ gave his life for us.
6:23 For the reward of sin is death; but what God freely gives is eternal
life in Jesus Christ our Lord.
