Notes on John 15:1-8
Introduction: John 15:1-8
demonstrate the difference between a historical believer and a true believer
in
Christ. The branches on the vine cannot survive unless the branch
is connected to the vine. The vine supplies
all of the nutrients to the branches. True believer dwell
in Christ and Christ dwells in His disciples.
The historical believer is a member of
the local church; they also know the bible backwards and forward.
Some preachers, some teachers, and many go through the motions
of being a believer. This is not enough.
Have you received Christ as your sacrifice for your inherited sin?
Romans 5:8
Have you accepted Christ as compensation for your personal sins?
Do you accept that the true Christ is risen?
Is Jesus Christ your Lord and Master? 1 Cor

A word about the use of several translations.
Men translated them all. The most widely read in the history
of the world is the KJV of 1769. It was ordered by a person that
was not religious. They picked seventy men
who were more fearful of King James than scared of God. They
were rewarded by The King. If you listen to
a preacher or teacher teach, one is taking their word as accurate
they are translating or preaching.
Just remember they are only men. Do you use any ones
else's writings, they are written by man, some are more
spirited that others. There are authors, which allowed the Holy
Spirit to flow through them more than others.
1 John 4:1.
Theses are inspired of God.
A
preacher or teacher needs to study, read books, listen to bible studies
and sermons in order to be feed himself. If the farmer does feed himself
he will not have enough strength to feed his flock ( farm animals).
All translations have errors in them. God's original word is infallible.
2
Tim 3:16.
Study for yourself 2 Tim 2:15.
The student is held eventually responsibly for what the student
believes.
More after the Translations.
John 15:1 KJV
1 ¶ I am the true
vine, and my Father is the husbandman.
2 Every branch in me that
beareth not fruit he taketh away: and
every
branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring
forth
more fruit.
3 Now ye are clean through
the word which I have spoken unto you.
4 Abide in me, and I in
you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself,
except it
abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me.
5 I am the vine, ye are
the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in
him,
the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do
nothing.
6 If a man abide not in
me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is
withered;
and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and
they are
burned.
7 If ye abide in me, and
my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye
will, and
it shall be done unto you.
8 Herein is my Father
glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall
ye
be my disciples.

John 15:1-8 CEV
Jesus Is the True Vine
1 Jesus said to his disciples:
I am the true vine, and my Father is
the gardener.
2 He cuts away every branch
of mine that doesn’t produce fruit.
But he trims
clean every branch that does produce fruit, so that it
will produce
even more fruit.
3 You are already clean
because of what I have said to you.
4 Stay joined to
me, and I will stay joined to you. Just as a branch
cannot
produce fruit unless it stays joined to the vine, you cannot
produce
fruit unless you stay joined to me.
5 I am the vine, and
you are the branches. If you stay joined to me,
and I stay
joined to you, then you will produce lots of fruit.
But you cannot
do anything without me.
6 If you don’t stay
joined to me, you will be thrown away. You will
be
like dry branches that are gathered up and burned in a fire.
7 Stay joined to
me and let my teachings become part of you. Then
you
can pray for whatever you want, and your prayer will be
answered.
8 When you
become fruitful disciples of mine, my Father will be
honored.

John 15-1-8 BBE Basic English
1 I am the true vine and
my Father is the gardener.
2 He takes away every
branch in me which has no fruit, and every
branch which
has fruit he makes clean, so that it may have more
fruit.
3 You are clean, even
now, through the teaching which I have given
you.
4 Be in me at all times
as I am in you. As the branch is not able to
give fruit
of itself, if it is not still on the vine, so you are not able
to do so
if you are not in me.
5 I am the vine, you are
the branches: he who is in me at all times
as I am in
him, gives much fruit, because without me you are able
to
do nothing.
6 If a man does not keep
himself in me, he becomes dead and is cut
off like
a dry branch; such branches are taken up and put in the
fire and
burned.
7 If you are in me at
all times, and my words are in you,
then anything
for which you make a request will be done for you.
8 Here is my Father's
glory, in that you give much fruit and so are
my true disciples.

John 15:1-8 Amplified Bible
1 I AM the True Vine,
and My Father is the Vinedresser.
2 Any branch in Me that
does not bear fruit [that stops bearing]
He cuts away (trims off, takes away);
and He cleanses and
repeatedly
prunes every branch that continues to bear fruit, to make it bear more
and richer and more excellent fruit.
3 You are cleansed and
pruned already, because of the word which I have given you [the
teachings I have discussed with you].
4 Dwell in Me, and I will
dwell in you. [Live in Me, and I will live
in you.] Just as no branch can bear fruit
of itself without abiding
in (being
vitally united to) the vine, neither can you
bear fruit unless you abide in Me.
5 I am the Vine; you are
the branches. Whoever lives in Me and I in him bears much (abundant)
fruit. However, apart from Me
[cut
off from vital union with Me] you can do nothing.
6 If a person does not
dwell in Me, he is thrown out like a [broken-off]
branch, and withers; such branches are gathered up and
thrown into
the fire, and they are burned.
7 If you live in Me [abide
vitally united to Me] and My words remain
in you and continue to live in your hearts, ask whatever you
will, and
it shall be done for you.
8 When you bear (produce)
much fruit, My Father is honored and glorified, and you show and prove
yourselves to be true
followers
of Mine.
Three conditions of the fruitful life:
1. Cleansing John 15:2-3. Cp John
13:10,
2. Abiding John
15:4,
3. Obedience John 15:4,10,12
The results of fruitful life
1. Law of Christ Gal 6:2. 2 John 1:5.
2. Fellowship 1 John
1:3.
3. Communion 1 Cor 10:16.
Three degrees in fruit-bearing:
1. Fruit John 15:2
2. More fruit John 15:2
3. Much fruit John 15:5,8.
The reality Fruit is mentioned three
or more times in this chapter points out the significance of fruit in
a believers life and witness..
The minor moralities and graces of Christianity
are often imitated, but never the ninefold "fruit" of
Gal 5:22-23. Where such fruit is the
Father is glorified. The Pharisees were moral and intensely "religious,
" but not one of them could say with Christ, "I
have glorified thee on the earth" John 17:4.

Gal 5:22 KJV But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering,
gentleness, goodness, faith,
23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.
24 And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections
and lusts.
25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.
26 Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying
one another.
Mat 7:16-20 CEV
16 You can tell what they are by what they do. No one picks grapes or figs
from thornbushes.
17 A good tree produces good fruit, and a bad tree produces bad fruit.
18 A good tree cannot produce bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot produce
good fruit.
19 Every tree that produces bad fruit will be chopped down and burned.
20 You can tell who the false prophets are by their deeds.

Many
retail Chains employ younger employees, because they are trainable. If
a company can teach
their employees to abide in the company, most companies fair
better in the market place. They would like
the people who labor for the company to perform as if it was
their company.
Many
a Church has started off with a bang and yet falls off in number present
from over 200 down
to 8 souls. Why? In functioning For the Lord the believer has to
abide in Christ and permit Christ through
the Holy Spirit to abides in them. As Christ says in verse
5 nothing one does themselves can be finished.
A Christian sometime loses sight of their goals. A believer’s eye
must be focused on Christ.
If you are a true believer Christ is the one doing the work
through you. Oh what a delight it is to let
Jesus work through you.
In the Old Testament The Vine was
shown to be Israel as God the Vinedresser.
Isa 5:1; Psalm 80:8.
Jesus said to his disciples: I am the true
vine, and my Father is the gardener. Christ is the True vine. One branch
of the vine should produce as much as another branch. All branches have
the equal potential. The more
they get food ( abide ) from the vine the greater the fruit.
The old saying you’ll know them by their fruits. Mat
7:20
To be without fruit means that Jesus’ goal for a life has been frustrated.
It signifies either:
(1) a false follower or
(2) a useless disciple (v. 4). The
former interpretation is to be favored, ( I do not
agree: I think a useless disciple)
and one such as Judas is a clear
and sorrowful example (cf. 13:18–30).
The fruitless one is cast into the
fire, for its only benefit is to provide fuel (v.
6).
The verses do not in any way contradict
the security of the believer taught in John 10:28
The presence of false disciples in
the church is not an unusual phenomenon
(cf.
Matt. 13:30, 47–50).

13 But there is going to come a time
of testing at the judgment day
to see what kind of work each builder has done. Everyone’s work
will be put through the fire to see whether or not it keeps its value.
14 If the work survives the fire, that
builder will receive a reward.
But if the work is burned up, the builder

The builders themselves will be saved,

The Lord corrects and disciples the one he loves. It is like
a parent that loves and cares for a child.
Sometime the father has to bring the child home early. Cp
Acts 5:1-11; Mat 24:22; Mark 13:20.
As was acknowledged earlier many a pastor, teacher,
and other worker for the Lord, which was doing the work
on their own. In a case like this it will not last long. Lots
of pastors have lost their pastorate due to them
turning from God ( not talking about salvation but the leading of
the Lord ) and becoming to believe it is their church. They believe it
was they, which built the church. The church belongs to Christ. Mat
16:18
When one starts to put themselves as the
person that is doing the ministry on their own. Christ said one
has to abide in him and He in the believer.
Some believe these passages would
have one to believe one could lose their salvation. Repetitively Christ
teaches his disciple all things have dependencies of Christ.
The Salvation of our souls is a love of God.
John 3:16. If God does the saving
it logically tells one, God is almighty and competent to keep that which
we
have dedicated to the Lord. John
10:25-30; 2 Tim 1:12; Romans 8:38-39.
Again some students teach these are lost
disciples never saved. They are only historical Christian.
It is one thing to know history of Christ another to be alive in
the history. Are you abiding in Christ?
Heard a Pastor’s son say in response
to some needed building materials. I made the statement we need
to pray for it. His answer was why should we pray I don’t
see where it is coming from.
Let me ask are they abiding in Christ? Have you made Christ
Lord and Master of you soul?
Another interpretation is this
is saved disciples. They have become useless, the lost of blessing will
be
their lot. God the father will discipline these souls. When
one’s life is not worth more than a pile of brush
you life is very bad. Christ seems to prune some ministries.
If a branch quits producing fruit, it will
become weak and die, it then has to be taken away before It harms
the rest of the branches. God takes care of his own. This
passages never states the branch left or lost
its salvation. The branch just became ineffective, lost its
fellowship. Eph 4:30.
This analysis seems to be correct and with
in keeping with the theme of the Bible.
No longer were these branches abiding in Christ. The branches were
unfruitful. It is not that they
had turned from Christ. They are not mention as not believing any
more. Their fruits were not with
Christ's sanction.
The branches are said to be in Christ. Are you doing the will
of God in your life?
Remember the time line was before the day of
Pentecost. On that day the Holy Ghost came as promised.
The Lord added to the Church. No person water baptized these
souls into any church. This would be man
having a hand into the salvation of their soul or it would
have said they were baptized into the church.
To be a member of a Local church one should be baptized or show
proof of being scriptural baptized. This has nothing to do with Salvation.
Baptism is not to be taken without due consideration. Typically
the first step a new believer takes in service
to their Lord and Master is tithing. Very quickly after salvation
one needs to follow in scriptural Baptism. Thereby showing the world they
have died and are risen with Christ. The believers life is so greatly blessed
when everyone obeys what the Lord leads a believer to do.
God does the saving. God even puts a seal on our salvation. God
is the custodian of the seal.
This seal is living. God is all-powerful. Eph
1:13; Eph 2:18; Eph 2:22; Eph 3:16; Eph 4:4; Eph 4:30; Eph 5:9
Verse 5. I am the vine, John 15:1 ( Barnes )
Without me ye can do nothing.
The expression "without me" denotes the same as separate from me. As the
branches, if separated from the parent stock, could produce no fruit, but
would immediately wither and die, so Christians, if separate from Christ,
could do nothing. The expression is one, therefore, strongly implying dependence.
The Son of God was the original source of life, John
1:4. He also, by his work as Mediator,
gives
life to the world (John
6:33), and it is by the same grace and agency
that it is continued in the Christian.
We see hence,
1st. That to him is due all the praise for
all the good works the Christian performs.
2nd. That they will perform good works just
in proportion as they feel their dependence on him and look to him.
3rd. That the reason why others fail of being
holy is because they are unwilling to look to him, and seek grace and strength
from him who alone is able to give it.
{1} "without me", or "severed
from me

Who does the saving?
Who does the holding?
Who does the sealing?

This then becomes works of right things (
