Notes on Mat 13:1-8
Introduction: There are Groups that have used
these verses as a view in establishing a doctrine of conditional security.
One of the chief ideas of establishing the doctrine of unconditional Security
is Who does the Saving of man’s soul? Of course it is God’s finished work
in the person of Jesus Christ.
These verses show forth what happens when the Person
goes out with a leaky seed bag. 2 Cor 9:6-15.
The believers are to go forth sowing seed. We are not to determine the
Ground or place to sow. Jesus is going on to
tell us that in sowing someone else will nurture the seed along.
He is also letting the believers know some will
never survive. These seeds will never be true believers and
some will be plucked away before they are allowed
to Grow.
The Devil continues to work.
Jesus used many objects in His sermons. The objects Christ
used where things the people of His time here on earth understood.
Jesus knew His subject matter. The translations and the use of them is
just the use of tools
that are helping people better understand the Scriptures.
They are only translations.
Do you use commentaries, Other Biblical books,
Listen or read someone else's sermons?
All decision about what the believer believes, has to be made of
their own freewill.
The believer is held responsible for the belief he promotes.
Mat 13:1 KJV The
same day went Jesus out of the house, and sat by the sea side.
2 And great multitudes were gathered together unto him, so that he
went into a ship, and sat;
and the whole multitude stood on the shore.
3 And he spake many things unto them in parables, saying, Behold, a sower
went forth to sow;
4 And when he sowed, some seeds fell by the way side, and the fowls came
and devoured them up:
5 Some fell upon stony places, where they had not much earth: and forthwith
they sprung up,
because they had no deepness of earth:
6 And when the sun was up, they were scorched; and because they had no
root, they withered away.
7 And some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprung up and choked them:
8 But other fell into good ground, and brought forth fruit, some
a hundredfold, some sixtyfold,
some thirtyfold.
9 Who hath ears to hear, let him hear.
10 And the disciples came, and said unto him, Why speakest thou unto them
in parables?
11 He answered and said unto them, Because it is given unto
you to know the mysteries of the
kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given.
12 For whosoever hath, to him shall be given, and he shall have more abundance:
but whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken away even that he hath.
Mat 13:1-12 NIV
1 That same day Jesus went out of the house and sat by the lake.
2 Such large crowds gathered around him that he got into a boat
and sat in it, while all the people stood on the shore.
3 Then he told them many things in parables, saying: "A farmer went out
to sow his seed.
4 As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds
came and ate it up.
5 Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang
up quickly,
because the soil was shallow.
6 But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered
because they had no root.
7 Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants.
8 Still other seed fell on good soil, where it produced a crop--a hundred,
sixty or thirty times what was sown.
9 He who has ears, let him hear."
10 The disciples came to him and asked, "Why do you speak to the people
in parables?"
11 He replied, "The knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of heaven
has been given to you, but not to them.
12 Whoever has will be given more, and he will have an abundance.
Whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken from him.

Mat 13:1-13 CEV
Jesus tells A Story about a Farmer
1 That same day Jesus left the house and went out beside Lake Galilee,
where he sat down to teach.
2 Such large crowds gathered around him that he had to sit in a boat,
while the people stood on the shore.
3 Then he taught them many things by using stories.
He said: A farmer went out to scatter seed in a field.
4 While the farmer was scattering the seed,
some of it fell along the road and was eaten by birds.
5 Other seeds fell on thin, rocky ground and quickly started
growing because the soil wasn’t very deep.
6 But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched and dried up,
because they did not have enough roots.
7 Some other seeds fell where thornbushes grew up and choked the plants.
8 But a few seeds did fall on good ground where the plants produced
a hundred or sixty or thirty times as much as was scattered.
9 If you have ears, pay attention!
Why Jesus Used Stories?
10 Jesus’ disciples came to him and asked,
“Why do you use nothing but stories when you speak to the people?”
11 Jesus answered: I have explained the secrets about
the kingdom of heaven to you, but not to others.
12 Everyone who has something will be given more.
But people who don’t have anything will lose even what little they have.
13 I use stories when I speak to them because when they look, they cannot
see,
and when they listen, they cannot hear or understand.

Mat 13:1-13 NLB
Story of the Farmer Scattering Seed
1 Later that same day, Jesus left the house and went down to the shore,
2 where an immense crowd soon gathered. He got into a boat,
where he sat and taught as the people listened on the shore.
3 He told many stories such as this one:
“A farmer went out to plant some seed.
4 As he scattered it across his field, some seeds fell on a footpath,
and the birds came and ate them.
5 Other seeds fell on shallow soil with underlying rock.
The plants sprang up quickly,
6 but they soon wilted beneath the hot sun and died because
the roots had no nourishment in the shallow soil.
7 Other seeds fell among thorns that shot up and
choked out the tender blades.
8 But some seeds fell on fertile soil and produced a crop that
was thirty, sixty, and even a hundred times as much as had been planted.
9 Anyone who is willing to hear should listen and understand!”
10 His disciples came and asked him,
“Why do you always tell stories when you talk to the people?”
11 Then he explained to them, “You have been permitted to
understand the secrets of the Kingdom of Heaven, but others have not.
12 To those who are open to my teaching, more understanding will be given,
and they will have an abundance of knowledge.
But to those who are not listening,
even what they have will be taken away from them.
13 That is why I tell these stories, because people see what I do,
but they don’t really see.
They hear what I say, but they don’t really hear
and they don’t understand.

Remember Christ is talking. He is talking
about the sower. Some times the rocks are hidden just beneath
the Ground. The Ground is what they call shallow. Some falls
in the by ways a well traveled path indicates
several things.
1. The Ground is so hard that it is not
suitable for growing. The seed can not take hold.
If we can not excretes
our faith the believer can not grow.
2. It is so busy no one takes time to be sure
it is planted. Seed have a depth they need to be planted.
They come forward
to receive Christ and no one tells them how.
The seed
needs to be planted in good soil.
3. The Ground is rocky, not soil with rocks
in it. Solid rock.
Here he is
talking about growing, making Believers. Not Foundation.
4. The seed is the word of God.
5. The soil is the believers Heart.
6. Watch out for the hot sun, the birds. The
Devil and his workers
7. If it comes up with the thorns they
must endure until the harvest.

it self.
Mat

9. Jesus is talking.
10. The field is the world. Romans

Others verses where
theses verses are recorded Mark 4:1-25; Luke 8:4-15.
Jesus had already preached this day. Mat
13:1.
By moving to the boat He removed the press of the people.
It gave him a central point.
The house was not big enough to house all of the people. Another
advantaged is sound carries well over water.
Many fisherman and boaters know this. Most lake and river
banks slope toward the water. This slope make excellent Setting to see
and hear.
Water also has a calming effect. Why are there so many ocean
liners,
pleasure cruises today?
This is not the First time Christ used parables. He
had used the parables in an illustration of
other truths, the mode Christ was uses was changing here, He starts
to tell about the kingdom of heaven.
In the thirteen Chapter of Matthew Christ begins to
preach The Mysteries of the Kingdom of Heaven.
The period of time between the King’s two advents. Luke
17:21
The Church age. Romans 11:25;
Romans 16:25; 1 Cor 2:7.
Christ had up to this point preached the
Kingdom of God. The Nation of Israel had started to reject Christ
as their King from God. The Jews were seeking a political
and nationalistic kingdom.
The millennial kingdom, which is to come in the
future (Rev 20:4) is another transitional
form of the kingdom
which will ultimately be presented to the Father to be the
eternal kingdom of God (Rev 21).
This figure marks a new beginning. Cp Mat
12:46-50.
Christ brethren becomes the ones around Him. His brethren
before was the nation of Israel.
Christ told the disciples why He was preaching in parables so only
the true believers could understand.
The church had not started yet. The Holy Ghost could not be sent
till Christ went to heaven.
John 16:7; John 14:16;
John 15:26; John 14:26
The same is true today only true believers can understand. The true
believer understands what is spiritual.
1 Cor 2:14-16.
Christ chose to speak in parables. Parables
are used to convey spiritual truth through a series of earthly
comparisons. Jesus was an expert at
this form of teaching.
Those to whom this revealed secret is not
given are those who have already rejected Christ.
Thus, to the unbeliever, the parable form
leaves him without understanding. Their rejection of Him leads
to His rejection of them.

Have you accepted or rejected Christ.
From Barnes in the Swordsearcher.
The design of speaking in parables was the
following:
1. To convey truth in a more interesting manner to the mind;
adding to the truth conveyed the beauty of a lovely image or narrative.
2. To teach spiritual truth so as to arrest the attention of ignorant people,
making an appeal to them through the senses.
3. To convey some offensive truth, some pointed personal rebuke,
in such a way as to bring it home to the conscience.
Of this kind was the parable which Nathan delivered to David,
2 Sam 12:1-7 and many of our Saviour's parables addressed to the Jews.
4. To conceal from one part of his audience truths which he intended others
should understand. Thus Christ often, by this means,
delivered truths to his disciples in the presence of the Jews,
which he well knew the Jews would not understand;
truths pertaining to them particularly,
and which he was under no obligations to explain to the Jews.
See Mark 4:33; Mat 13:13-16.
Our Saviour's parables are distinguished above all others for clearness,
purity, chasteness,
intelligibility, importance of instruction,
and simplicity. They are taken mostly from the affairs of common life,
and intelligible, therefore, to all men. They contain much of himself his
doctrine, life, design in coming, and claims; and are therefore of importance
to all men; and they are told in a style of native simplicity intelligible
to the child, yet instructive to men of every rank and age. In his parables,
as in all his instructions, he excelled all men in the
purity, importance, and sublimity of Iris
doctrine.
Many an preacher and teacher could take note of
Christ teachings. He used anything to teach.
Christ taught by example, He taught by association, Christ mixed
with the people. Jesus knew His doctrine
( many preachers today do not know what their church [denomination]
( believes.)
Preachers need to Mix with the flock. Christ knew what was in the
peoples hearts. The pastor is the undershepherds. He has a job, If
one of the flock strays the shepherd is to go after the stray.
No ifs ands or buts. He goes after the sheep that goes a stray.
It works. It is His Job. There is a Song by the Crossmen Quartet named
"In The Fold" that tell the story of the lost sheep.
Mat 18:12-14 NIV
12 "What do you think? If a man owns a hundred sheep, and one of them wanders
away,
will he not leave the ninety-nine on the hills and go to look for the one
that wandered off?
13 And if he finds it, I tell you the truth, he is happier about that one
sheep than about the
ninety-nine that did not wander off.
14 In the same way your Father in heaven is not willing that any of
these little ones should
be lost.

The believers are told to pray for
one another. Col 1:19; 1 Thess 5:25; 2 Thess 3:1;
Heb 13:18; 1 John 5:16.
People when they are ill some times
let things bother them when normally it would not.
And again if a preacher or teacher is not willing to defend what
they are teaching. That person in that position
loses a lot of respect or can be a false teacher or preacher.
If one is working for the Lord they need that respect
or their will sooner or later become of naught.
I know of a case where the church was in
a building program. They gather up a group in
the church supposed to be for input. This one person is a commercial
carpenter from a large city.
Him and his wife have a house here and one 400 mile from here where
he works. They asked for him to come
all the way back up here to attend a meeting. When he arrived "they"
had decided what the plans were going
to be. These people have kin folks in another state. There
are times they a can not be at church. During the
week he works 400 miles away.
Well the pastor say he did not say that
about people not being at church everytime the doors are open
. But the pastor did in stronger terms from the pulpit. The pastor
was told that he needed to go by on a visit
with this couple. Two Sundays later the preacher has still
not gone by to visit or call.
But he did preach a sermon why he was not going by. This man has
in the mean time has seriously injured
to his knee. Pastor still has not gone by to visit. This is the
wrong, this is the wrong spirit.
God changes pastors churches get new pastors because God changes
them.
The use of the field and the type of ground relates to the
world and the hearts of men.
What Christ here is telling is very important read verse 9. Anytime
one sees that statement God is telling the
reader of His word to pay attention.
Christ is not here talking about people losing their
salvation. He is explaining what is happen to the word of
God as it is preached in the world. This too is the reason
there are so many difference types of religions that
use the Bible as their basics. One needs to be saved to understand
the word of God. There are saved in a lot of difference Churches because
it is the word of God that convicts. Heb 4:12
. The Holy Spirit Convicts using the
Word of God. There are many hears also that are not saved they have
not taken it to their heart. Romans 2:13; James 1:22.
Do you know that Christ is real?
Do you know that Heaven is real?
Do you know that Hell is real?
Do you know that the lake of fire is real?
Did you know that all of these are for ever?
Everlasting.
Did you know there is no soul sleep?
Romans 10:8-18 CEV
8 All who are acceptable because of their faith simply say,
“The message is as near as your mouth or your heart.”
And this is the same message we preach about faith.
9 So you will be saved, if you honestly say, “Jesus is Lord,”
and if you believe with all your heart that God raised him from death
10 God will accept you and save you,
if you truly believe this and tell it to others.
11 The Scriptures say that no one who has faith will be disappointed,
12 no matter if that person is a Jew or a Gentile.
There is only one Lord, and he is generous to everyone who asks for his
help.
13 All who call out to the Lord will be saved.
14 How can people have faith in the Lord and ask him to save them
if they have never heard about him?
And how can they hear, unless someone tells them?
15 And how can anyone tell them without being sent by the Lord?
The Scriptures say it is a beautiful sight to see even the feet of
someone coming to preach the good news.
16 Yet not everyone has believed the message.
For example, the prophet Isaiah asked,
“Lord, has anyone believed what we said?”
17 No one can have faith without hearing the message about Christ.
18 But am I saying that the people of Israel did not hear?
No, I am not! The Scriptures say, “The message was told everywhere on earth.
It was announced all over the world.”
