Notes on Mat 18:23-35
Introduction: These verses are again ones many
try to use to show Salvation is of God and man.
They’re by making the Salvation of man’s soul conditional.
That is to say if one is to stay saved
it is up to man. The Bible puts forth a figure of Salvation
of man’s soul being a completed work of Christ at the cross. If Salvation
be a completed work of God then God’s Salvation of mans soul then is secure
in His finished work. If God is all powerful he is able to save to the
uttermost. Heb 7:25; 2 Tim 1:12; Jude 1:24.
Christ is speaking in these verses telling the
disciples how the Church, when it is started on the day of Pentecost,
the day the Spirit Ascended, should act. How much does the
reader understand the important and power of God’s love? His love is real.
Hell
( the lake of fire) is real. Hell
is forever. If God’s Grace is great enough the forgive the sinner
his sin debt shouldn’t the believer forgive a fellow believer. In dealing
with souls and teaching souls one has to be a fruit inspector but long
suffering. Gal 5:22-25
A note about these translations. They are for
study. They are translations that used one or more difference manuscripts.
They are used to enlighten much like commentaries or other study helps.
The way one believes rest solely up on the individual own belief brought
about by the study of the word of God. 2 Tim 2:15.
The KJV has had more references written and taught using that translation
(KJV) than any to present. There is another the scofield updated KJV which
just updates the old words to new ones. Words Seem to change meaning with
age. The word Gift meant a present for no cost. Now it means that buy this
and you get this free. If one has to do more than accept a gift it is not
free. A gift to make someone be Good is not a gift that person has to work
at being good or being Baptized. Romans 6:23.
In verse 34 Justice is on the Grounds of law. As compared to the Grace
of God offered to the sinners of the world..
Mat 18:23 KJV Therefore is the kingdom of heaven likened unto a certain
king,
which would take account of his servants.
24 And when he had begun to reckon, one was brought unto him,
which owed him ten thousand talents.
25 But forasmuch as he had not to pay, his lord commanded him to be sold
and his wife, and children, and all that he had, and payment to be made.
26 The servant therefore fell down, and worshipped him, saying, Lord,
have patience with me, and I will pay thee all.
27 Then the lord of that servant was moved with compassion, and loosed
him,
and forgave him the debt.
28 But the same servant went out, and found one of his fellowservants,
which owed him an hundred pence: and he laid hands on him,
and took him by the throat, saying, Pay me that thou owest.
29 And his fellowservant fell down at his feet, and besought him, saying,
Have patience with me, and I will pay thee all.
30 And he would not: but went and cast him into prison,
till he should pay the debt.
31 So when his fellowservants saw what was done, they were very sorry,
and came and told unto their lord all that was done.
32 Then his lord, after that he had called him, said unto him,
O thou wicked servant, I forgave thee all that debt,
because thou desiredst me:
33 Shouldest not thou also have had compassion on thy fellowservant,
even as I had pity on thee?
34 And his lord was wroth, and delivered him to the tormentors,
till he should pay all that was due unto him.
35 So likewise shall my heavenly Father do also unto you,
if ye from your hearts forgive not every one his brother their trespasses.
Mat 18:23-35 NIV
23 "Therefore, the kingdom of heaven is like a king who wanted to settle
accounts with his servants.
24 As he began the settlement, a man who owed him ten thousand talents
was brought to him.
25 Since he was not able to pay, the master ordered that he and his wife
and his children and all that he had be sold to repay the debt.
26 "The servant fell on his knees before him. `Be patient with me,' he
begged,
`and I will pay back everything.'
27 The servant's master took pity on him, canceled the debt and let him
go.
28 " But when that servant went out, he found one of his fellow servants
who owed him a hundred denarii. He grabbed him and began to choke him.
`Pay back what you owe me!' he demanded.
29 "His fellow servant fell to his knees and begged him, `Be patient
with me,
and I will pay you back.'
30 "But he refused. Instead, he went off and had the man thrown into
prison
until he could pay the debt.
31 When the other servants saw what had happened, they were greatly
distressed and went and told their master everything that had happened.
32 "Then the master called the servant in. `You wicked servant,'
he said,
`I canceled all that debt of yours because you begged me to.
33 Shouldn't you have had mercy on your fellow servant just as I
had on you?'
34 In anger his master turned him over to the jailers to be tortured,
until he should pay back all he owed.
35 "This is how my heavenly Father will treat each of you unless
you forgive
your brother from your heart."

Mat 18:23-35 CEV
23 This story will show you what the kingdom of heaven is like:
One day a king decided to call in his officials and ask them
to give an account of what they owed him.
24 As he was doing this, one official was brought in who
owed him fifty million silver coins.
25 But he didn’t have any money to pay what he owed.
The king ordered him to be sold, along with his wife
and children and all he owned, in order to pay the debt.
26 The official got down on his knees and began begging,
“Have pity on me, and I will pay you every cent I owe!”
27 The king felt sorry for him and let him go free.
He even told the official that he did not have to
pay back the money.
28 As the official was leaving, he happened to meet another official,
who owed him a hundred silver coins. So he grabbed the man
by the throat. He started choking him and said,
“Pay me what you owe!”
29 The man got down on his knees and began begging,
“Have pity on me, and I will pay you back.”
30 But the first official refused to have pity. Instead, he went
and had the other official put in jail until
he could pay what he owed.
31 When some other officials found out what had happened,
they felt sorry for the man who had been put in jail.
Then they told the king what had happened.
32 The king called the first official back in and said,
“You’re an evil man! When you begged for mercy,
I said you did not have to pay back a cent.
33 Don’t you think you should show pity to someone else,
as I did to you?”
34 The king was so angry that he ordered the official to be
tortured until he could pay back everything he owed.
35 That is how my Father in heaven will treat you,
if you don’t forgive each of my followers with all your heart.

(Matthew 18:23-35)
23 For this reason the kingdom of heaven is like a king,
who went over his accounts with his servants.
24 And at the start, one came to him who was in his debt
for ten thousand talents.
25 And because he was not able to make payment,
his lord gave orders for him, and his wife, and his sons
and daughters, and all he had, to be given for money,
and payment to be made.
26 So the servant went down on his face and gave him worship,
saying, Lord, give me time to make payment and I will give you all.
27 And the lord of that servant, being moved with pity, let him go,
and made him free of the debt.
28 But that servant went out, and meeting one of the other servants,
who was in debt to him for one hundred pence,
he took him by the throat, saying, Make payment of your debt.
29 So that servant went down on his face, requesting him and saying,
Give me time and I will make payment to you.
30 And he would not: but went and put him into prison till
he had made payment of the debt.
31 So when the other servants saw what was done they were very sad,
and came and gave word to their lord of what had been done.
32 Then his lord sent for him and said, You evil servant;
I made you free of all that debt, because of your request to me:
33 Was it not right for you to have mercy on the other servant,
even as I had mercy on you?
34 And his lord was very angry, and put him in the hands of those
who would give him punishment till he made payment of all the debt.
35 So will my Father in heaven do to you, if you do not everyone,
from your hearts, give forgiveness to his brother.
Mat 18:23-35 NLT
23 “For this reason, the Kingdom of Heaven can be compared
to a king who decided to bring his accounts up to date with
servants who had borrowed money from him.
24 In the process, one of his debtors was brought in who owed
him millions of dollars.
25 He couldn’t pay, so the king ordered that he, his wife,
his children, and everything he had be sold to pay the debt.
26 But the man fell down before the king and begged him,
‘Oh, sir, be patient with me, and I will pay it all.’
27 Then the king was filled with pity for him, and he released him
and forgave his debt.
28 “But when the man left the king, he went to a fellow servant
who owed him a few thousand dollars. He grabbed him by the
throat and demanded instant payment.
29 His fellow servant fell down before him and begged for a
little more time. ‘Be patient and I will pay it,’ he pleaded.
30 But his creditor wouldn’t wait. He had the man arrested and jailed
until the debt could be paid in full.
31 “When some of the other servants saw this, they were very upset.
They went to the king and told him what had happened.
32 Then the king called in the man he had forgiven and said,
‘You evil servant! I forgave you that tremendous debt because
you pleaded with me.
33 Shouldn’t you have mercy on your fellow servant,
just as I had mercy on you?’
34 Then the angry king sent the man to prison until he had paid
every penny.
35 “That’s what my heavenly Father will do to you if you refuse
to forgive your brothers and sisters in your heart.”

Back in Matthew's Chapter 13:1
Jesus began preaching and teaching pertaining to the Kingdom of Heaven
( the mysteries of the church, Church is not started at this
time,
Holy Spirit has to be sent Acts chapters 1-2) the Kingdom is the
period of time between the Advents of Christ
comings in the Kingdom of God . 1 Thess 4:13-18
The Church as people call it. The Church is the called out
Assembly. Acts 2 :1-4 .
The passages that are being deal with here are an expression of
love. Everything that relates to God,
Christ going of His own accord to the cross is love.
1 John 4:7 KJV Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God;
and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God.
8 He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.
9 In this was manifested the love of God toward us,
because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world,
that we might live through him.
Mat 22:37-40 NLT
37 Jesus replied, “ ‘You must love the Lord your God with all your
heart,
all your soul, and all your mind.’
38 This is the first and greatest commandment.
39 A second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’
40 All the other commandments and all the demands of the prophets
are based on these two commandments.

Love is what God is all about. The believers are servants bought
with a price. Love.
[Bible in Basic English] (John 15:13)
Greater love has no man than this, that a man gives up his life for his
friends.
KJV Bible commentary
18:23–35 To illustrate further why men ought to forgive one another
the comparatively
small offenses which divide them, Jesus told a parable to
illumine God’s greater forgiveness.
The sum which the first servant owed to the king was exorbitant.
If the Attic talent is intended,
about 6,000 denarii were involved in just one Attic talent. Remembering
that a denarius was
a day’s normal wage, the poor fellow owed something like 60,000,000
denarii. Even a nobleman
could not have amassed such a fortune in a lifetime. On the other
hand, the fellow servant owed
only 100 denarii. After finding mercy from the king even to the
extent of the cancellation of his
debt, this abominable fellow subjected his fellow servant to the
most stringent punishment for
his failure to produce a far lesser sum.

Studies.
True forgiveness “from the heart” of a regenerate man is
one of the true signs of genuine salvation and conversion (cf. Eph 4:32).
Saved people are both forgiven and forgiving.
Unforgiving people prove that they have never been born of God.

[Bible in Basic English] (Ephesians 4:32)
And be kind to one another, full of pity, having forgiveness for one another,
even as God in Christ had forgiveness for you.
If one notices that the amount is of such that the servant
could never repay. The amount the sinner owes
God for the Salvation of the sinners soul can never be paid
by that or any other sinner. The king never asked for full
payment of the account. He just wanted a payment.
The debt was so great the king wanted everything this servant had
was his, even his family. How Great a debt
could one make which would allow their family taken away from
them forever in an effort to payment of a debt.
In this time ( Christ was telling about) one was also put in prison.
Till the debt was paid.
The man was a servant everything belonged to the King any way.
For more on the practice of selling into slavery Exodus
21:2; Lev 25:39; 2 Kings 4:1; Ne 5:5; Isa 50:1.
The amount owed was more than this man could ever
hope of making in his life time. This man was a servant
when he owed the debt, servant when forgiven, and still a servant
when he was delivered to the tormentors. He
never lost his status of being a servant.
All of the King’s servants had to fellowship
( get along together ) like a church. There are souls that are born
with certain talents more are given talents from God causing theses
to be more visible than others. Whether one has a large talent or small
talent they are all great in the sight of God. Acts
10:34
Beside the parents teaching their children
about the things of God. The first teacher that a child encounters in Sunday
School is the possibly the most important person in the church. Many a
parent has been saved as a result
of that teacher allowing God to use them. As a result the parents
hear the Gospel and receive Jesus as their personal saviour. This
teacher teaches this student how to respect the Church building, congregation,
God,
the word of God, Pastor, and teachers.
As by now many know that I visit believe
in soul winning. One can not visit and win souls by not contracting souls.
For a business to survive, the business needs contracts ( traffic) because
one is selling their business
products or services. The believer has a job of selling the world
on Jesus as the way to Heaven. This visiting and soul winning is the best
way to get illustrations for a sermon.
[Bible in Basic English] (John 14:6)
Jesus said to him, I am the true and living way: no one comes to the Father
but by me.
Once I was with a pastor visiting . We visited
this young man that has a wife and two children Less than school age. He
had a nasty note on the door for people that were bothering him. It had
a four letter word in the note. He had moved and needed to be back in church.
The salvation of his soul and his wife’s soul was less than a year
old. The preach could not keep his mouth shut
about the note on the front door. The man had lost a friend in death.
His friend was sick and killed himself.
This family needed a friend. This pastor has
done so much damage that this young family may never be in church. If they
are not in Church how can God deal with their needs. God uses other believers
to tend to the needs of other believers. What about the Children? These
Children are at the ripe age to be saved. Both he and his wife have parents,
brothers, and sisters.
Oh the responsibly a believer has.
Another story. As some know my oldest
daughter was in a wheel chair. She died 9-11-2001.
Her son lives with us. Elven years old. At school he made
friends of a boy that his dad is in a wheel chair. It turns
out that some of their other problems are the same. This boy lives
with his grandmother, his brother, and his dad.
At the time I am telling about they were not in a church. When they
moved here the Grandmother had their house blessed. The Baptist youth pastor
performed the task.
instead of trying to get the boys in church he does thing to drive
them away. The young boy had scratched his forehead from a fall. For the
effects of looks the boy had let his hair grow and combed it down to cover
the place. This Great youth pastor said that boy needs his hair cut so
he can see before they will let him in church. Needless to say they are
not attending that church. Everyone wants to be a pastor none wants to
work at it.
[Bible in Basic English]
(Hebrews 10:25)
Not giving up our meetings, as is the way of some,
but keeping one another strong in faith; and all the more because
you see the day coming near.
Do you the reader comprehend the love that was involved
in God providing for the Salvation of Man’s soul for all eternality?
Have you accept that love that Christ died for? John
3:16
If you have accepted Christ have you told any one about what
Christ did? Mat 28:19-20
If you have accepted Christ one could simply invite someone
to hear the Gospel? 1 Cor 15:1-11
