it then, brethren? when ye come together, every one of you hath a psalm,

Let all things be done unto edifying.
Eph 5:19 Speaking to yourselves
in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your
heart to the Lord;

you afflicted? let him pray. Is any merry? let him sing psalms.
Eph
4:8 Wherefore he saith, When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive,
and gave gifts unto men.
Music is one of the ways the heart uses to lift up praises to the Lord.
Psalms 66:1
Ps 66:1 To the chief Musician, A Song or Psalm. Make a joyful
noise unto God, all ye lands:
Psalms 98:6
With trumpets and sound of cornet make a joyful noise before the LORD,
the King.
Psalms 81:1; Psalm 95:1.
Whether The Joyful noise is of the voice of your
talents from God are the playing of musical instruments.
The talents are a joy unto the
Lord if they come from the heart. The Gifts are from God.
One’s Gifts ( talents ) are all from God. Some have Gifts in having
a successful business, Teaching, preaching (public speaking.), a missionary
that is great at understanding foreign languages is a blessing
To that work, and also a person that God has given
the Gifts of playing musical instruments.
Here Paul is telling that the whole body of Christ
has to fit neatly together. That there are many Kinds of Gifts or talents
all working for one purpose. Edifying the soul , leading a soul to a Personal
experience with the Lord Jesus Christ.
1 Cor 12:4 Now there are diversities
of gifts, but the same Spirit.
5 And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord.
6 And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God
which worketh all in all.
7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit
withal.
8 For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another
the word of knowledge by the same Spirit;
9 To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of
healing by the same Spirit;
10 To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to
another discerning of spirits;to another divers kinds of tongues;
to another the interpretation of tongues:
11 But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing
to every man severally as he will.
In the following verses Paul
speaks of the gifts of the trumpet, piped, or harped playing.
He never say not to not play these instruments in
a meeting of the “called out”. Paul says that his greatest Calling is the
edify the Saints. Some in the Corinth church were bragging that their gift
or gifts were Greater than someone else. The key was does it edify someone.
Look at some of the Psalms they edify.
1 Cor 14:6 Now, brethren, if I come unto you speaking with tongues,
what shall I profit you, except I shall speak to you either by
revelation, or by knowledge, or by prophesying, or by
doctrine?
7 And even things without life giving sound, whether pipe or
harp, except they give a distinction in the sounds, how shall
it be known what is piped or harped?
8 For if the trumpet give an uncertain sound, who shall
prepare himself to the battle?
9 So likewise ye, except ye utter by the tongue words easy to
be understood, how shall it be known what is spoken? for ye
shall speak into the air.
10 There are, it may be, so many kinds of voices in the world,
and none of them is without signification.
11 Therefore if I know not the meaning of the voice, I shall be
unto him that speaketh a barbarian,
and he that speaketh shall be a barbarian unto me.
12 Even so ye, forasmuch as ye are zealous of spiritual gifts,
seek that ye may excel to the edifying of the church.
Here Paul tells of soul that has a Psalm.
1 Cor 14:26 How is it then, brethren? when ye come together, every
one of you hath a psalm, hath a doctrine, hath a tongue,
hath a revelation, hath an interpretation.
Let all things be done unto edifying.
In Col 3:16 as well as
other in the New Testaments speak of Psalms, Hymns, and Spiritual songs.
Col 3:16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom;
teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and
hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your
hearts to the Lord.
In all of the following verse Col
3:16; 1 Cor 14:26; Eph 5:19 the word translated psalms is the same
In all of these verses.
Psalmos-- [Grk. 5568] psalmos
(psal-mos')
from 5567; a set piece of music, i.e. a sacred ode (accompanied with the
voice, harp or other instrument; a "psalm"); collectively, the book of
the Psalms:--psalm.
Compare 5603. Strong’s Numbers.
Psalm , a sacred hymn of praise
and worship, to be sung to the accompaniment of stringed instruments:
1 Chr 16:9; James 5:13
Hymns-- [Grk. 5215] humnos (hoom'-nos)
apparently from a simpler (obsolete) form of hudeo
(to celebrate; probably akin to 103; compare 5667);
a "hymn" or religious ode (one of the Psalms):--hymn.
Song-- [Grk. 5603] ode (o-day')
from 103; a chant or "ode" (the general term for any words
sung;while 5215 denotes especially a religious metrical
composition, and 5568 still more specially, a Hebrew
cantillation):--song.
James 5:13 Is any among you afflicted? let him pray. Is any merry? let
him sing psalms.
Psalms--- [Grk. 5567] psallo
(psal'-lo)
probably strengthened from psao (to rub or touch the surface; compare 5597);
to twitch or twang, i.e. to play on a stringed instrument (celebrate the
divine worship with music and accompanying odes):--make melody, sing (psalms).
Easton’s Dictionary
Hymn-- occurs only Eph. 5:19 and Col. 3:16.
The verb to "sing an hymn" occurs Matt. 26:30 and
Mark 14:26.
The same Greek word is rendered to "sing praises"
Acts 16:25 (R.V., "sing hymns") and Heb. 2:12. The "hymn"
which our Lord sang with his disciples at the last Supper is
generally supposed to have been the latter part of the Hallel,
comprehending Ps. 113-118.
It was thus a name given to a number of psalms taken
together and forming a devotional exercise.
The noun hymn is used only with reference to the services of
the Greeks, and was distinguished from the psalm. The Greek
tunes required Greek hymns.
Our information regarding the hymnology of the early
Christians is very limited.
Hymn IBSE him (humnos):
In Col 3:16; Eph 5:19 Paul bids his readers sing "psalms and hymns and
spiritual songs." Gregory of Nyssa (4th century) distinguishes these as
follows:
the Psalms were accompanied by instruments, the hymns were mainly vocal,
and the song, ode, was a general term comprehending both. This distinction
might suggest that the psalm belonged especially to the public worship
of the church, while the hymn was the production, more or less spontaneous,
of the individual member.
Lots of more instering Facts on music
can be found in the program e-sword
Many will argue that a person can only make a joyful
noise with their voice. If they think that a person can not make a joyful
noise in their heart with a musical instrument has never watched a person
play an instrument and see the joy in their heart and eyes. Psalm
were read or sung with the present of a harp or other instruments.
Again some of these same people that try to say that there was not any
musical instruments in the early churches just have not read these passages.
I have another question. If we are
not to use musical instruments in church do they use a public address system.
( sound system?) This was not used in the early church. You
can not Say that you are not doing one thing in church because the early
church did not do it. Then do another thing in church that the early church
did not do. Are there Radio and T.V?
Equipment in the church?
How does it fit in?
This was not in the early church!
Does the church use printed material in the worship?
Be careful If they try to control their people on
one subject but do not use the same standards on other subjects.
A wrong is wrong no matter how you word it.
