Notes on Romans 6:1-23

Introduction: The study of theses verses reflect Paul’s total belief in who does the saving of his soul.
Paul also was persuaded who was able to keep what Paul had committed to the Lord.
Rom 8:38 BBE For I am certain that not death, or life, or angels, or rulers, or things present,
or things to come, or powers,
39  Or things on high, or things under the earth, or anything which
is made, will be able to come between us and the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
2 Tim 1:10 BBE But has now been made clear by the revelation of  our Saviour Christ Jesus,
who put an end to death and made life unending come to light through the good news,
                                                  11  Of which I was made a preacher and an Apostle and a teacher;
12  And for which I undergo these things: but I have no feeling of shame.
For I have knowledge of him in whom I have faith,
and I am certain that he is able to keep that which I have given into his care till that day.

The presentation and use of difference translation and commentaries are for the edifying of The Saints.

giving the true word in the right way.
Some people do not believe in reading Christian works written by someone call and lead of God to share
their views of God’s word. The Jews had their scribes. Not everyone has the original manuscripts.
The English speaking world only has access to translations this is excluding Greek, Hebrew, Arabic Scholars. These translation some done by Great men of God. They are here for the edifying of the believers. Read and experience the enjoyment of God speaking to you through the Holy Ghost.  God’s word will take care of it’s self.
Heb 4:12; Rev 22:18-19. To limit God’s word is a very solemn undertaking.

Romans 6:1-23 BBE [Bible in Basic English]
1949/1964 Bible In Basic English
Rom 6:1  What may we say, then? are we to go on in sin so that there may be more grace?
                  Facts:
                  1. Paul’s is the writer.
                  2. He is continuing comparing Sin and the Grace of God.
                  3. Grace ( unmerited ) does not include Baptism, church membership, Good works, or Lord’s supper.
All of theses are the fruits of the spirit. Gal 5:22-26.
                  4. All of our Sins past, present, and future covered by The Grace of God.
                  5. If the believer sin, does that make Grace more? No. see verse 2.
Rom 6:2  In no way. How may we, who are dead to sin, be living in it any longer?
                Facts:
                1. Answer to verse one. In the Greek it suggest a strong no. The KJV says God Forbid.
The word for God is not used in the Greek.
                2. Sometimes in communications a negative or positive Question has to be asked in order to establish
                     a more accurate understanding.
                3. We as believers are dead to sin. Death is separation. The believer is delivered from the control and
                      power of Sin.
                4. The believer is bought with a price.
If you are a believer, Jesus became both Lord and Master of you Life.
The instant the believer repents ( change from the heart their look on sin.) and allows Jesus
to save their soul. They died and arose with in newness of Life.
                            2 Cor 5:17; Gal 6:15; Romans 6:4; Romans 7:6.
                                  2 Cor 5:17 BBE So if any man is in Christ, he is in a new world: the old things have come to an end;
                                                                 they have truly become new.
18  But all things are of God,  who has made us at peace with himself through Christ,
                                                        and has given to us the work of  making peace;
19  That is, that God was in Christ making peace between the world and himself,
not putting their sins to their account,  and having given to us the preaching of this news of peace.
                 5. Why would a Christian, saved by the all powerful God through Jesus Christ, want to live any longer in
                       it? ( Sin ).
They would lost the Joy and peace that comes with living Righteously.
Psalm 3:8 BBE Salvation comes from the Lord; your blessing is on your people. Selah.

Rom 6:3Or are you without the knowledge that all we who had baptism into Christ Jesus, had baptism  into his death?
                Facts:
                1. Baptized Simply means immerse.
Most people robotically associate it with Water.
                    This is not Always true.
                    Baptized  [Grk. 907] baptizo (bap-tid'-zo)   (Strong’s)
                                 from a derivative of 911; to immerse, submerge; to make whelmed (i.e. fully wet);
used only (in the New Testament) of ceremonial ablution, especially (technically)
of the ordinance of Christian baptism:--Baptist, baptize, wash.
               2. Here it is talking about the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The believer being identify
                   with Christ.  Died to Sin.
                   A. Jesus talked about drinking of the cup and to be baptized with the baptism that He is to be
baptized with. Mat 20:22; Mark 10:38; Luke 12:50.
                                Mark 10:38  BBE
38 But Jesus said to them,  You have no knowledge of what you are saying.
Are you able to take of my cup? or to undergo the baptism which I am to undergo?
                                   39  And they said to him, We are able. And Jesus said to them,  You will take of the cup from which I take;
and the baptism which I am about to undergo you will undergo:
40  But to be seated at my right hand or at my left is not for me to give: but it is for those for whom it has been made ready.
Three Writers give a description of the identical saying.  This was talking about the
Death – God forsake. Mat 27:26; Mark 15:34.
Burial – product of the death of the body.
Resurrection – Divine ( God’s )  Hand in our Salvation.
                   B. Baptism of The Holy Ghost ( Spirit – the breath of God.)
                          I. The indwelling of The Holy Spirit. Acts 1:8; 1 Cor 6:19.
II. Baptized into one body by one Spirit. 1 Cor 12:11-14
1 Cor 12:11 BBE But all these are the operations of the one  and the same Spirit,
giving to every man separately as his pleasure is.
12  For as the body is one, and has a number of  parts, and all the parts make one body,  so is Christ.
13  For through the baptism of the one Spirit we were all formed into one body, Jews or Greeks,
servants or free men, and were all made full of the same Spirit.
14  For the body is not one part,  but a number of parts.
                     C. Then there is the Baptism John the Baptist performed , He paved the way Mat 3:2.
Before John would Baptize them they had to repent ( be remorseful).
                              Mat 3:7; Luke 3:3-4; John 1:29.
Even his baptism was a symbol. Jesus was without sin. Jesus is God the son,
Setting at the Father right hand. Mat 25:33-34; Mat 26:64; Mark 16:19; Luke 22:69
A place of authority. Christ trip to the Cross earned Him that place.
Luke 22:69  BBE But in the future the Son of man will be seated at the right hand of the power of God.
              3. Water Baptism is a sign to the World that the believer has changed. Shows a witness of the believer
in Christ. It is only symbolic has no power to save.. I do know the sooner it is after
one believes in the Name of Jesus they are baptized to quicker and better their walk.
              4. Many Churches require baptism as a requirement of Joining the Local Church. In the book of Acts
the believers were water baptized because it was the thing to do.
Are you doing what a Christian is suppose to do?
Water baptism is the first confession that a believer has died to sin, was buried with Christ, with Christ
                 rose to a new life.
Remember after one becomes a believer they are a new creature.
2 Cor 5:17 BBE So if any man is in Christ, he is in a new world: the old things have come to an end; they have truly become new.

God through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit makes the believer a new creation. Gen 1:1-3 .
The Holy Spirit Does the work. The Word of God and the Holy Spirit can bring Righteousness out of
                   darkness.
Is there new light in your life. A believer came out of darkness into the light through Faith
in Jesus as saviour of their souls. John 14:6; Mat 5:14; John 12:46.
              5. In chapter 6 of Romans there are four key words.
These key words show the believer’s personal duties in God’s sanctifying work.
To set apart. Paul is not talking about Salvation.
                        A. To know.   Verses 3, 6, 9
                        B. To reckon. Verses 11
                        C. To yield. Verses 13, 16, 19
                        D. To obey. Verses 16-17.
Rom 6:4  We have been placed with him among the dead through baptism into death:  so that as Christ came again from the dead by the
glory of the Father, we,  in the same way, might be living in new life.

                 Facts:
                  1. Buried with Christ. Baptized into death, into not unto.
                  2. Christ was raised up from the dead by the Father.
                  3. What raised Christ from the Grave (death)? Glory of the Father ( God)
If 1 Cor 15:1-11 is the Gospel. God sent His only begotten son to died a sacrifice acceptable to
God the Father and God raised him from the dead.
How can man have any thing to do with man saving their own soul? It is all of God’s doing. The
sinful world has to accept God’s plan.
                 4. Believer’s also walk in newness of life. A new life in Christ.
Rom 6:5  For, if we have been made like him in his death, we will, in the same way,  be like him in his coming to life again;

                  Facts:
                  1. If we are united with Christ in the likeness of Christ’s death . We also be like him in
                      righteousness through the  resurrection.
Rom 6:6  Being conscious that our old man was put to death on the cross with him,  so that the body of sin might be put away,
and we might no longer be servants to sin.

                  Facts:
                  1. In the study of God’s word it is important to become aware of the many times a subject matter is
                        repeated.
Paul’s writing, which God chose Paul for His love of God, Paul’s zeal, and His education.
                       John 14:26
The fact it is repeated and explained by difference styles of illustrations proves it’s worth.
                  2. Now verse 5
                       A. The old man is crucified with Christ. Eph 4:22; Col 3:9
All that man’s work in Adam. Both morally and lawfully.
The corrupt Human nature. The inborn tendency to evil in all men.
                3. In verse 6 It is the natural man Himself. Eph 4:22 and Col 3:9 it is natural man’s ways.
                 4. If you are living in Sin. You are you to serve sin as a bond slave. Sin will annihilate you
unless you permit Christ to obliterate the body of sin for you.
Rom 6:7  Because he who is dead is free from sin.
                Fact:
                1. He who is dead is Free from Sin.
Rom 6:8  But if we are dead with Christ, we have faith that we will be living with him;
                Facts:
                1. How can we be freed from sin? Death.
                2. If the believer died with Christ the believer will live with Christ. Makes sense.
Rom 6:9  Having knowledge that because Christ has come back from the dead, he will never again go down to the dead;
death has no more power over him.
                Facts:
                 1. If God the Father raised Christ from the dead, Christ will die no more.
Some try to say that one can lose their salvation. First it is God’s salvation of man’s soul by Grace,
undeserved Grace.  If one could lose the salvation of their  soul they would have to have Christ die
again. He died once and only once.
I am glad God through Jesus does the saving and the keeping. John 10:27-30
Heb 2:3 BBE What will come on us, if we do not give our minds to such a great salvation?
a salvation of which our fathers first had knowledge through the words of the Lord,
                                                       and which was made certain to us by those to whom his words came;
4  And God was a witness with them, by signs and wonders, and by more than natural powers,
and by his distribution of the Holy Spirit at his pleasure.

                 2. Christ died once for all. Nothing else has any bearing on the salvation of our soul.
If we could have any thing to do with our salvation we would not need Christ.
There is a difference in fellowship and eternal life.
Heb 10:10  BBE By that pleasure we have been made holy,  by the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once and for ever.
11  And every priest takes his place at the altar day by day, doing what is necessary,
and making again and again the same offerings which are never able to take away sins.
                                                   12  But when Jesus had made one offering for sins for ever, he took his place at the right hand of God;
13  And has been waiting there from that time, till all who are against him are made a foot-rest for his feet.
14  Because by one offering he has made complete for ever those who are made holy.
                  3. The result of Sin is death, Christ won. Death and sin have no power over Him.
Therefore sin has no control over Christ. Christ lives. If Christ lives so do the believers Live and
are free from the power of sin.
Rom 6:10  For his death was a death to sin, but his life now is a life which he is living to God.
                  Facts:
                  1. Significant, again repeated , Christ died once unto sin.
                  2. The life Christ lives is unto God. If believers died, buried, and arose with Christare we living to  God?
Rom 6:11  Even so see yourselves as dead to sin, but living to God in Christ Jesus.
                  Facts:
                   1. In the KJV the word Reckon is used.
The Greek is strong == count on, rely upon.
                             [Gr.. 3049] logizomai (log-id'-zom-ahee) (Strong’s)
middle voice from 3056; to take an inventory, i.e. estimate (literally or
figuratively):--conclude, (ac-)count (of), + despise, esteem, impute, lay, number,
                                     reason, reckon, suppose, think (on).
                   2. Like wise the believer is dead to sin.
                   3. How is the believer alive?
                        It is through Christ Jesus.
John 14:6 BBE Jesus said to him, I am the true and living way: no one comes to the Father but by me.

The same Jesus that the repentance believer made both Lord and Master of your life.
Rom 6:12  For this cause do not let sin be ruling in your body which is under the power of death,  so that you give way to its desires;
                  Facts:
                  1. Christ took care of sin. He put it to death for the believers.
Why should the believers let sin reign in our human fleshly bodies. Our bodies are corrupt and
will decay, the are under the power of death.
                 2. Sin
                         A. Transgression, overstepping of the law. Psalm 51:1; Romans 2:23

                         E. Trespass  Man stepping into the bubble of God’s authority. Eph 2:1
                         F. Lawlessness or Spiritual Anarchy. 1 Tim 1:9
                         G. Unbelief or an offense of divine truth (witness) John 16:9
                                                                       John 16:9  BBE Of sin, because they have not faith in me;
John 5:10 BBE He who has faith in the Son of God has the witness in himself:
he who has not faith in God makes him false,
because he has not faith in the witness which God has given about his Son.
11  And his witness is this, that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.

In verse 11 of 1 John 5 has is past tense the believer already has eternal
life now. How?  In His son.
John 3:16 BBE For God had such love for the world that he gave his only Son,
so that whoever has faith in him may not come to destruction but have eternal life.

The only thing reveal in these verses is faith or believing.
Something as important as the salvation of your soul should be repeated and repeated.
                         God does the Saving.
                                      Eph 2:6 BBE So that we came back from death with him,  and are seated with him in the heavens,  in Christ Jesus;
7  That in the time to come he might make clear the full wealth of his grace in his mercy to us in Christ Jesus:
8  Because by grace you have salvation through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is given by God:
9  Not by works, so that no man may take glory to himself.
10  For by his act we were given existence in Christ Jesus to do those good works which
God before made ready for us so that we might do them.

                  3. Where did or how did sin start?
                        A. Satan was the author. Isa 14:12-14
                        B. Came into the human race through Adam. Romans 5:12
                        C. Sin was and is universal . Christ  was born of a virgin thereby escaping the curse of Adam’s sin.
Hence the Virgin birth. Romans 3:23; 1 Peter 2:22
                        D. Sin brings about both Spiritual and Physical death.
                             Gen 2:17; Gen 3:19; Eze 18:4,20; Romans 6:23.
                       E. What is the only cure for sin? Accept the sacrificial Death, burial and Resurrection of the
living Christ, now seated at God the Father’s right hand. Acts 4:12; Heb 9:26.
                       F. This remedy is obtain by Faith. Acts 13:38-39.
Acts 13:38 BBE And so, let it be clear to you, my brothers, that through this man forgiveness of sins is offered to you:
39  And through him everyone who has faith is made free from all those things,
from which the law of Moses was not able to make you free.
                  4. Sin is stated to be threefold.
                       A. An act of disseverance to God’s revealed will.
                       B. A state absence of the righteousness of God.
                       C. Natural – enemy of God.
                  5. Desires or Lust == Covet Exodus 20:17
                          (Strong’s)  [Grk. 1939] epithumia (ep-ee-thoo-mee'-ah)
from 1937; a longing (especially for what is forbidden):--
                                                                   concupiscence, desire, lust (after).
Rom 6:13  And do not give your bodies to sin as the instruments of wrongdoing, but give yourselves to God,
as those who are living from the dead, and your bodies as instruments of righteousness to God.
                  Facts:
                   1. The lost of the world use the members of their bodies as instruments of Sin  ( unrighteousness ).
                   2. If you could use the members of your body for sin, don’t yield to sin.
Yield to God and let the members of the body be use for righteousness.
If one can happen why not use the opposite for the good of the Lord if you are saved by God’s
                       Grace through Jesus.
                   3. Paul is talking about the mind, heart, hands, legs, mouth, and etc,.
                   4. Righteousness unto God is All that God demands and approves.
                   5. This righteousness is found in Christ, God’s only son John 3:16, who met every obligation of the Law.
                          1 Cor 1:30; Cp Lev 25:47-52; Romans 3:26; Romans 4:6; Romans 10:4; 2 Cor 5:21;
                          Phil 3:9; James 2:23.
Rom 6:14  For sin may not have rule over you: because you are not under law, but under grace.
                  Facts:
                  1. Sin has no dominion ( rule ) over the believer.
If sin has no rule over a Christian how can they lose the Salvation of their soul?
1 Cor 3:14  BBE If any man's work comes through the test,  he will have a reward.
15  If the fire puts an end to any man's work, it will be his loss: but he will get salvation
                                                                                           himself, though as by fire.
Again repeated how are soul’s saved? Not by works.
Works == Baptism, the lord’s supper, Good works, given to the needy, church membership,
and being a preacher or teacher in church. someone else praying for
your sins. Each person has to as forgiveness for their own sins. No man
can forgive sin. If a church leader can not tell you for sure how to get to
                                                             heaven something is wrong.

Luke 5:21  BBE And the scribes and Pharisees were having an argument, saying, Who is this,
who has no respect for God?  Who is able to give forgiveness for sins, but God only?
Oh how plain is the way of Salvation and the bible says you can know.
If you have truly asked Jesus to be your saviour and come into you life You will know.

1 John 5:10 BBE  He who has faith in the Son of God has the witness in himself:
he who has not faith in God makes him false,
because he has not faith in the witness which God has given  about his Son.
11  And his witness is this, that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.
12  He who has the Son has the life; he who has not the Son of  God has not the life.
13  I have put these things in writing for you who have faith in the name of the Son of God,
so that you may be certain that you have eternal life

Do you have eternal life? If not please ask God to save you through his son Jesus Christ.
                  2. The believer is saved by unmerited Grace. Believers are not under the Law.

Rom 6:15  What then? are we to go on in sin because we are not under law but under grace?Let it not be so.
                   Facts:
                   1. Dose this give the believer free reign to Sin?  No..
                   2. Paul again answer is Strong terms.

                   Facts:
                    1. Paul takes something his readers understood Slavery. There is provisions in the Law for
treatment of Slaves. Slaves had inheritance rights. Read the story of Abraham and David.
                     2. At the time of Paul and even countries today there is slavery. People sell their children as  slaves.
Many of the souls which settled the United States of American were bond slaves.
The slave that wrote the song Amazing Grace was a slave. Worked on a slave ship.
Jacob had to spend fourteen years in debt for Rachel.
                     3. A slave or servant had to obey their master.
A job in the USA is like being a slave.
                                A. You have to do what the boss wants.
                                B. Your life style and family is affected by the pay and type of Job.
                     4. If you are lost, you belong to the Devil. John 8:44.
                     5. What is the reward for obeying Sin? Sin unto death.
Sin is the reason we get sick. Sin brought sickness into the world.
Sin is the reason we died. Sin through Adam passed to all.
                                               Rom 3:10  BBE As it is said in the holy Writings,  There is not one who does righteousness;
Rom 5:12  BBE For this reason, as through one man sin came into the world, and death because of sin,
and so death came to all men,  because all have done evil:
                   6. We that are born of the water ( the Flesh ) have a choice to make Sin or Righteousness.

                      7. One of the most effective ways of speaking, preaching, or explain anything is to use an
                           illustrations.
A picture is worth a thousand words. Jesus used Parables and Paul used pictures of every
Day life. Paul also used the negative to explain the positive.

Rom 6:17  But praise be to God that though you were the servants of sin, you have now given yourselves
                            freely to that form of teaching under which you were placed;
                   Facts:
                    1. Who do we thank for our Salvation, God or man for mans part in it.?
God be thankful. Man had nothing to do with God’s plan of Salvation.
John 3:13 BBE And no one has ever gone up to heaven but he who came down from heaven, the Son of man.
14  As the snake was lifted up by Moses in the waste  land,
even so it is necessary for the Son of man to be lifted up:
15  So that whoever has faith may have in him eternal life.
16  For God had such love for the world that he gave his  only Son, so that whoever has faith in him
may not come to destruction but have eternal life.
                                                                17  God did not send his Son into the world to be judge of  the world;
he sent him so that the world might have salvation through him.
God the Father sent Christ ( man did not plan or call Christ down).
So the world would be able by faith have salvation ( now ) .
How ? Only one way God’s way through Christ.
Faith and believing are stressed as the way of salvation it is repeated
over 115 times in the New Testament.
                        2. There has been a change. Once a servant of sin now obey the Gospel. Lost -- found
                        3. What was the form of Doctrine which was delivered you?
                             1 Cor 15:1-11; John 14:6
That Jesus was the promised Saviour. His death, burial, and resurrection.
Rom 6:18  And being made free from sin you have been made the servants of righteousness.
                  Facts:
                   1. Argument if the believer is liberated from sin, the believer became servants of righteousness.

Rom 6:19  I am using words in the way of men, because your flesh is feeble: as you gave your bodies as servants to what is unclean,
and to evil to do evil, so now give them as servants to righteousness to do what is holy.
                  Facts:
                  1. Paul tries various ways and resources to cause his readers to comprehend to the fullest.
                  2. He speaks to the way of man.. Flesh has infirmity, is feeble
                              [Grk. 769] astheneia (as-then'-i-ah) ( Strong’s Lexicon )

                                                           morally, frailty:--disease, infirmity, sickness, weakness.
                  3. Again Paul remains them, if they have yielded to sin, they could now yield their bodies as instruments,
arms, minds, and ect, to servant of righteousness.
                  4. How does one get to Holiness or Holy?
Through the imputed righteousness of Jesus Christ.
Man has by no means been righteousness without faith in Jesus Christ.
Man’s self righteousness can by no means save anyone’s soul.
Eze 33:12 BBE And you, son of man, say to the children of your people,
                                                                            The righteousness of the upright man will not make him  safe in the day when he does wrong;
and the evil-doing of the evil man will not be the cause of his fall in the day when he is turned
from his evil-doing; and the upright  man will not have life because of his righteousness in
the day when he does evil.

Rom 6:20  When you were servants of sin you were free from righteousness.
                   Facts:
                   1. Verse 20 speaks for itself. When you are a servant ( bondage ) of sin then that soul is free
                       from righteousness.
                   2. If you have given your heart to Jesus, the opposite is true. You are free from the burden of sin.
Joint-heirs with Christ the moment you accept Christ’s paying your sin debt.

Rom 8:15 BBE For you did not get the spirit of servants  again to put you in fear, but the spirit of sons
was given to you, by which we say, Abba, Father.
16  The Spirit is witness with our spirit that we are children of God:
17  And if we are children, we have a right to a part in the heritage; a part in the things of God,
together with Christ; so that if we have a part in  his pain,
we will in the same way have a part in his glory.
Again in Romans 8:16 Paul is telling the believer they can recognize they are saved.

Rom 6:21  What fruit had you at that time in the things which are now a shame to you? for the end of  such things is death.
                   Facts:
                    1. Fruit is not always Good or of God.
                    2. Does a believer have a right to participate in the things they are ashamed of.
                      Romans 10:11
                    3. If there are things in your life you are ashamed, you need to Get your soul right with God.
The soul is endless. Where do you want to spend eternity? Hell ? or Heaven?
The soul is everlasting. It has to spend eternity some were?
Ecc 3:14 BBE I am certain that whatever God does will be for ever.
                                                                        No addition may be made to it, nothing may be taken from it;
and God has done it so that man may be in fear before him.

                     4. The shameful things finish in death.
                             A. If something has to be done in secret don’t be a part of it. Don’t be ashamed.
Can you tell your wife ( or husband ) what you are doing?
Can you tell your church what you are doing?
Can you talk freely about what God is or has done in you life?
What brought you to know Christ? Do you have a testimony?
Christ coming into you life to dwell in you heart in the person of
The Holy Ghost can not go ignored if you are saved.

Rom 6:22  But now, being free from sin, and having been made servants to God, you have your fruit in that which is holy,
and the end is eternal life.
                   Facts:
                   1. In verse 21 Paul offered the negative.
                   2. In verse 22 he presents the positive.
                   3. Christ was free from the domination of Sin through His victory at the Cross, His burial,
and His resurrection. If  our old man died with Christ and was raised in a new life then.
The believer is made free from sin by Jesus Christ, the believer becomes a servant to God.
                    4. Here is Good fruit. The resulting fruit is righteousness because Christ is in us.
                    5. What is the end of God’s righteousness?  Eternal Life.
Act 7:55  BBE But he was full of the Holy Spirit, and looking up to heaven,
he saw the glory of God and Jesus at the right hand of God.
56  And he said, Now I see heaven open, and the Son of man at
                                                                                                    the right hand of God.
Rom 6:23  For the reward of sin is death;
but what God freely gives is eternal life in Jesus Christ our Lord.
                  Facts:
                  1.  Wages or reward of sin is death. This is merited pay. Pay one works for.

                      C. Eternal ( forever )separation from God. Rev 2:11; Rev 20:6,14; Rev 21:8
                      D. The unsaved natural man has not the Spirit of God. Romans 8:9; 1 Cor 2:14.
                  3. The opposite of death and merited pay ( pay one deserves ) is the Gift of God everlasting life.
                  4. How do you get the unmerited Gift?
KJV through better translated in Jesus Christ.

Romans 6:1 KJV ¶ What shall we say then? Shall we continue in
                 sin, that grace may abound?
2 God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer
       therein?
3 Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus
Christ were baptized into his death?
4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death:
that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory
of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
5 For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his
death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection:
6 Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that
the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should
      not serve sin.
7 For he that is dead is freed from sin.
8 Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also
     live with him:
   9 Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more;
death hath no more dominion over him.
10 For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth,
       he liveth unto God.
11 Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin,
but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.
12 Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should
obey it in the lusts thereof.
13 Neither yield ye your members as instruments of
unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God,
as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as
      instruments of righteousness unto God.
14 For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under
      the law, but under grace.
15 What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law,
       but under grace? God forbid.
16 Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey,
his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death,
      or of obedience unto righteousness?
17 But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin,
but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which
       was delivered you.
18 Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of
       righteousness.
19 I speak after the manner of men because of the infirmity of
your flesh: for as ye have yielded your members servants to
uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity; even so now yield
your members servants to righteousness unto holiness.
20 For when ye were the servants of sin, ye were free from
       righteousness.
21 What fruit had ye then in those things whereof ye are now
ashamed? for the end of those things is death.
22 But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God,
ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life.
23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life
       through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Romans 6:1-23 NIV
1 What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace
       may increase?
2 By no means! We died to sin; how can we live in it any longer?
3 Or don't you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ
Jesus were baptized into his death?
4 We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death
in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through
the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.
5 If we have been united with him like this in his death, we will
certainly also be united with him in his resurrection.
6 For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that
the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no
      longer be slaves to sin--
7 because anyone who has died has been freed from sin.
8 Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live
     with him.
9 For we know that since Christ was raised from the dead,
he cannot die again; death no longer has mastery over him.
10 The death he died, he died to sin once for all; but the life he
       lives, he lives to God.
11 In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God
        in Christ Jesus.
12 Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that
        you obey its evil desires.
13 Do not offer the parts of your body to sin, as instruments of
wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God, as those who
have been brought from death to life; and offer the parts of your
body to him as instruments of righteousness.
14 For sin shall not be your master, because you are not under
        law, but under grace.
15 What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but
        under grace? By no means!
16 Don't you know that when you offer yourselves to someone to
obey him as slaves, you are slaves to the one whom you
obey--whether you are slaves to sin, which leads to death,
or to obedience, which leads to righteousness?
17 But thanks be to God that, though you used to be slaves to sin,
you wholeheartedly obeyed the form of teaching to which you
         were entrusted.
18 You have been set free from sin and have become slaves to
         righteousness.
19 I put this in human terms because you are weak in your
natural selves. Just as you used to offer the parts
of your body in slavery to impurity and to ever-increasing
wickedness, so now offer them in slavery to righteousness
        leading to holiness.
20 When you were slaves to sin, you were free from the control
          of righteousness.
21 What benefit did you reap at that time from the things you
are now ashamed of? Those things result in death!
22 But now that you have been set free from sin and have become
slaves to God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the
          result is eternal life.
23 For the wages of sin is death,
but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Romans 6:1-23 CEV
1 What should we say? Should we keep on sinning,
so that God’s wonderful kindness will show up even better?
2 No, we should not! If we are dead to sin,
how can we go on sinning?
3 Don’t you know that all who share in Christ Jesus by being
baptized also share in his death?
4 When we were baptized, we died and were buried with Christ.
We were baptized, so that we would live a new life,
as Christ was raised to life by the glory of God the Father.
5 If we shared in Jesus’ death by being baptized,
we will be raised to life with him.
6 We know that the persons we used to be were nailed
to the cross with Jesus. This was done, so that our sinful
bodies would no longer be the slaves of sin.
7 We know that sin doesn’t have power over dead people.
8 As surely as we died with Christ, we believe we will also live
      with him.
9 We know that death no longer has any power over Christ.
He died and was raised to life, never again to die.
10 When Christ died, he died for sin once and for all.
But now he is alive, and he lives only for God.
11 In the same way, you must think of yourselves as dead to the
power of sin. But Christ Jesus has given life to you,
       and you live for God.
12 Don’t let sin rule your body. After all, your body is
bound to die, so don’t obey its desires
13 or let any part of it become a slave of evil. Give yourselves
to God, as people who have been raised from death to life.
Make every part of your body a slave that pleases God.
14 Don’t let sin keep ruling your lives. You are ruled by God’s
kindness and not by the Law.

Slaves Who Do What Pleases God

15 What does all this mean? Does it mean we are free to sin,
because we are ruled by God’s wonderful kindness and
not by the Law? Certainly not!
16 Don’t you know that you are slaves of anyone you obey?
You can be slaves of sin and die, or you can be obedient slaves
of God and be acceptable to him.
17 You used to be slaves of sin. But I thank God that with
all your heart you obeyed the teaching you received from me.
18 Now you are set free from sin and are slaves who please God.
19 I am using these everyday examples, because in some ways
you are still weak. You used to let the different parts of your
body be slaves of your evil thoughts. But now you must make
every part of your body serve God, so that you will belong
       completely to him.
20 When you were slaves of sin, you didn’t have to please God.
21 But what good did you receive from the things you did?
All you have to show for them is your shame, and they lead to
       death.
22 Now you have been set free from sin, and you are God’s slaves.
This will make you holy and will lead you to eternal life.
23 Sin pays off with death. But God’s gift is eternal life given by
        Jesus Christ our Lord.

1 Well then, should we keep on sinning so that God can show
us more and more kindness and forgiveness?
2 Of course not! Since we have died to sin, how can we continue
      to live in it?
3 Or have you forgotten that when we became Christians and
were baptized to become one with Christ Jesus, we died with
      him?
4 For we died and were buried with Christ by baptism. And just
as Christ was raised from the dead by the glorious power of
the Father, now we also may live new lives.
5 Since we have been united with him in his death, we will also
       be raised as he was.
6 Our old sinful selves were crucified with Christ so that sin
might lose its power in our lives. We are no longer slaves
     to sin.
7 For when we died with Christ we were set free from the power
     of sin.
8 And since we died with Christ, we know we will also share
      his new life.
9 We are sure of this because Christ rose from the dead,
and he will never die again. Death no longer has any power
      over him.
10 He died once to defeat sin, and now he lives for the glory of God.
11 So you should consider yourselves dead to sin and able to live
for the glory of God through Christ Jesus.
12 Do not let sin control the way you live; do not give in to its
       lustful desires.
13 Do not let any part of your body become a tool of wickedness,
to be used for sinning. Instead, give yourselves completely
to God since you have been given new life. And use your whole
body as a tool to do what is right for the glory of God.
14 Sin is no longer your master, for you are no longer subject
to the law, which enslaves you to sin. Instead, you are free by
      God’s grace.

Freedom to Obey God

15 So since God’s grace has set us free from the law,
does this mean we can go on sinning? Of course not!
16 Don’t you realize that whatever you choose to obey becomes
your master? You can choose sin, which leads to death,
or you can choose to obey God and receive his approval.
17 Thank God! Once you were slaves of sin, but now you have
obeyed with all your heart the new teaching
      God has given you.
18 Now you are free from sin, your old master, and you have
become slaves to your new master, righteousness.
19 I speak this way, using the illustration of slaves and masters,
because it is easy to understand. Before, you let yourselves be
slaves of impurity and lawlessness. Now you must choose to be
slaves of righteousness so that you will become holy.
20 In those days, when you were slaves of sin, you weren’t
concerned with doing what was right.
21 And what was the result? It was not good, since now you are
ashamed of the things you used to do,
things that end in eternal doom.
22 But now you are free from the power of sin and have become
slaves of God. Now you do those things that lead to holiness
       and result in eternal life.
23 For the wages of sin is death,
but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus
        our Lord.
