Notes on Romans 8:11-17
Introduction: I started out to bring into play
Romans
8:11-17 as the text. This passage of scripture is
used by various groups as a method to struggle and provide
evidence that a person once saved can be lost or go away from their salvation.
First it is not their salvation.
The Salvation of your soul is a total Plan
and work of the Godhead. God the father sent and
Raised His on born son. God the son is Christ Jesus, and The Holy
Spirit prefects the saints Gives then a new nature. The God the Spirit
seals, put God stamp or seal showing and establishing the believers standing
with God. The Spirit keeps us for eternality.
Would God leave his house or temple? 2 Cor
1:22; Eph 1:13; Eph 4:30; 2 Tim 2:19.
2 Cor 1:21 CEV
And so God makes it possible for you and us to stand firmly together with
Christ.
God is also the one who chose us
22 and put his Spirit in our hearts to show that we belong only to
him.
God is great. God is spelled GoOd
with the O me missing. He takes care of the
person that looses their mind
or comes down with Alzheimer's disease. Once more we as believers
must keep in mind what the Scriptures
edify.
Who does the Saving?
Who Is In Charge?
Whose preparation of Salvation is it, man or God’s?
Whose son was sent into the world to save sinners?
Whose son died, was buried, and arose?
Who gave His life so others might be alive?
The powerfulness of Salvation of man’s soul by a loving
righteous God can not be entirely understood until one surrenders to Christ.
Jesus was Called Jesus before His death, Burial, and Resurrection.
Afterwards He is called Christ or Christ Jesus. In order to comment
and fully understand these verses one Needs
to look back in context Romans 8:1-30
The Third Greatest Gift to man is the printed word of God.
The first is man’s life and a free choice.
The second is the man Christ Jesus; it is also the most essential.
The translators of the KJV set forth a principle.
“ The translators to the reader.
“ This is the word of God which we translate.”
“ We desire that the scriptures too may be understood.”
It seems every translation has theses Goals in mind.
The Devil works at shifting the significance of words
down throughout the ages.
The word Universal has changed. It use to mean the whole of the
sum. Every one that believed the same is one. Now through the world it
means in most people minds one fits all. The muslin and Christian God being
the same god. The God they worship did not die for the world. The followers
hurt others and die for their so-called leaders. Their religious leaders
get someone else to do their bidding.
The Christian leader died for all who will believe
and accept Christ.
God did the dirty work for us. 1 John 4:8.
Another example of word change. Gift originally
mean you were given a present only because someone cared, or loved you.
Now it is something you are given ( the gifts price is figured in, you
are paying for it anyway ) because you buy something else. God’s Gift is
liberated, on the House. You just have to recognize the job Jesus Christ
finished for His father at the cross. Beware of anyone who wants you to
stay with only one translation.
1 John 4:1-8.
If we are to only use one translation what
about the missionaries going to do teach English.
Translations are done so people can understand and be saved. The
Churches in the dark ages sheltered the Holy Word so they could control
their people. In fact they by this practice cause many people to go to
Hell ( the lake of fire ).
Rev
20:15 CEV Anyone whose name wasn't written
in the book of life was thrown into the lake of fire.
The KJV might be the customary; many
fine works are based on the KJV. They the commentators still had to go
to the original Greek, Hebrew, and Aramaic. There are things translated
improperly in it.
If you preaching or teaching
will not hold up in the study of other translations or commentaries one
needs to prayerfully study some more.
By no means just take one person’s
word. Study yourself.
2 Tim 2:15 CEV
Do your best to win God's approval as a worker who doesn't need to be ashamed
and who teaches only the true message.

Living by the Power of God’s Spirit
Romans 8:1 If you belong
to Christ Jesus, you won’t be punished.
Facts:
1. Living by the authority of God’s Spirit.
2. What will happen if you are in Christ? The believer will not be condemned
or punished.
The Holy Spirit is bringing things to Paul remembrance. The Holy
Spirit is repeating what
the Apostle John wrote.
John 3:18 CEV
No one who has faith in God's Son will be condemned.
But everyone who doesn't have faith in him has already been condemned for
not having faith in God's only Son.
The Holy Spirit through the men God inspired, tell how to stay away from
condemnation ( Hell ) there is one way and one way only Faith ( believing
)
there is no reference to Good works saving or keeping on doing Good works..
Water Baptism is only a representation ( illustration ). Works
Eph 2:8-9.
Eph 2:8 CEV
You were saved by faith in God, who treats us much better than we
deserve.
This is God's gift to you, and not anything you have done on your own.
9 It isn't something you have earned, so there is nothing you
can brag about.
Yes you can brag about you water baptism, your church membership.
3. If you are in Christ you have a new nature ( life, character ).
2 Cor 5:17; Gal 6:15; Eph 2:10; Eph 3:9; Eph 4:24.
There forth you will not walk after the sin nature.
The believer has a new nature.
1 Cor 3:16 CEV
All of you surely know that you are God's temple and that his Spirit lives
in you.
17 Together you are God's holy temple, and God will destroy anyone
who destroys his temple.
18 Don't fool yourselves! If any of you think you are wise in the
things of this world,
you will have to become foolish before you can be truly wise.
There is grave hazard in the way one treats a child of God’s.
Romans 8:2 The Holy Spirit
will give you life that comes from Christ Jesus and will set you
free from sin and death.
Facts:
1. How are the Believer’s are set free? Holy Spirit.
2. Wherever does the Spirit come from? Who sends the Holy Ghost? Christ
Jesus.
3. Spirit of Christ makes the believer free from the Law of sin and death.
The only thing that the Law of Moses did was to uncover guiltiness of a
soul as a sinner.
Moses Law shows us what sin is. It defined sin. The conclusion of sin is
death.
Rom 6:23 CEV Sin pays off with death. But
God's gift is eternal life given by Jesus Christ our Lord.
4. The you in various manuscripts is translated me.
Romans 8:3 The
Law of Moses cannot do this, because our selfish desires make the Law weak.
But God set you free when he sent his own Son to be like us sinners and
to be a sacrifice for our sin.
God used Christ’s body to condemn sin.
Facts:
1. Law of Moses cannot save. You have heard of man working their way to
Heaven.
Well that is what the Law of Moses is. Mat
19:20; Luke 18:21
The Flesh will not let us be free from sin. There is too much self in the
flesh.
2. God sent His son as the sacrifice for the sinner and the sins of the
world.
Mark 2:17 CEV Jesus heard them and answered,
"Healthy people don't need a doctor, but sick people do.
I didn't come to invite good people to be my followers. I came to invite
sinners."
3. If one is not saved, they don’t have the Spirit of Christ living in
them God cannot hear
their prayers.
John 9:31 CEV We
know that God listens only to people who love and obey him.
God doesn't listen to sinners.
4. The death, burial, and resurrection condemn sin. Christ took away the
supremacy of sin
in the death of His body.
5. Yet again Faith is mention as the solitary way to be given God’s Salvation.
No mention of Water Baptism, Good works, and being baptized in water, live
an upright Life,
join the church, giving to the poor is all Good works.
They don’t save.
Eze 33:13 Man’s ( his ) Righteousness can
not save.
It is by accepting Christ a saviour. 1 Cor 15:1-11;
John 14:6.
6. Romans 3:20 CEV
God doesn't accept people simply because they obey the Law. No, indeed!
All the Law does is to point out our sin.
21 Now we see how God does make us acceptable to him. The Law and
the Prophets tell
how we become acceptable, and it isn't by obeying the Law of Moses.
Romans 8:4 He
did this, so that we would do what the Law commands by obeying the Spirit
instead of our own desires.
Facts:
1. God did this so the righteousness of the Law could be fulfilled in us
by the Holy Spirit.
Mat 5:17 CEV Don't
suppose that I came to do away with the Law and the Prophets.
I did not come to do away with them, but to give them their full
meaning.
18 Heaven and earth may disappear. But I promise you that not even
a period or comma will ever disappear from the Law.
Everything written in it must happen.
Christ's relation to the law of Moses may be thus summarized:
(1) He was made under the law Gal 4:4.
(2) He lived in perfect obedience to the law John
8:46 Mat 17:5 1 Peter 2:21-23.
(3) he was a minister of the law to the Jews, clearing it from rabbinical
sophistries,
enforcing it in all its pitiless severity upon those who professed to obey
it (e.g.)
Luke 10:25-37 but confirming the promises
made to the fathers under the
Mosaic Covenant Romans 15:8.
(4) He fulfilled the types of the law by His holy life and sacrificial
death Heb 9:11-26.
(5) He bore, vicariously, the curse of the law that the Abrahamic
Covenant might avail all who believe Gal 3:13,14.
(6) He brought out by His redemption all who believe from the place of
servants
under the law into the place of sons Gal 4:1-7.
(7) He mediated by His blood the New Covenant of assurance and grace in
which
all believers stand Romans 5:2 Heb 8:6-13
so establishing the
"law of Christ" Gal 6:2 with its precepts
of higher exaltation made possible
by the indwelling Spirit.
The old Scofield Study Oxford press.
2. We are again to walk after ( with the guide of ) the Spirit of God,
thus obeying the Spirit in us.
3. The Holy Spirit is a person of the Godhead. Verse
16 in the KJV the Spirit is and if they
translated itself a more correct translation would be Himself.
The King James translate the Holy Spirit, Holy Ghost. I love
the pose that it is translated
into. One has to know what is intended by the original to understand.
Romans 8:5 People
who are ruled by their desires think only of themselves. Everyone who is
ruled by the Holy Spirit thinks about
spiritual things.
Facts:
1. There is a warfare going on within the flesh ( wicked Flesh ) is fighting
against the Spirit.
Gal 5:17; Gal 6:8.
Gal 5:17 CEV The Spirit and your desires are
enemies of each other.
They are always fighting each other and keeping you from doing what you
feel you should.
18 But if you obey the Spirit, the Law of Moses has no control
over you.
2. Are you ruled by the wishes of the flesh?
A. Is being intoxicated walking after the Spirit of God?
B. Is Smoking walking after the Spirit or the desires of the flesh?
C. Is breaking good laws of government walking after the Spirit?
D. If you do a job just to get by, is that the witness of the Spirit?
Paul made tents.
3. The person that has a lot of spiritual things are they of God?
1 Cor 1:29 CEV God
did all this to keep anyone from bragging to him.
30 You are God's children. He sent Christ Jesus to save us and to
make us wise, acceptable, and holy.
31 So if you want to brag, do what the Scriptures say and brag about
the Lord.
Spiritism is real but is it of God? NO
Remember Saul in the Old Testament the story of the medium
1 John 4:1 CEV Dear friends, don't believe
everyone who claims to have the Spirit of God.
Test them all to find out if they really do come from God.
Many false prophets have already gone out into the world,
4. There is nothing immoral with being prosperous Deu
8:18; Mal 3:10.
Deu 8:17 CEV When you become successful, don't
say, "I'm rich, and I've earned it all myself."
18 Instead, remember that the LORD your God gives you the strength
to make a living.
That's how he keeps the promise he made to your ancestors.
19 But I'm warning you--if you forget the LORD your God and worship
other gods, the LORD will
destroy you, just as he destroyed the nations you fought.
Nothing is wrong with being a ruler, king, and person of power if Spiritual
things
are foremost. God needs to be in your work. Who placed you in that Job?
Just look around. If is not right to lie and cheap people to get rich.
There is nothing wrong with in bargaining. Buy right to make a big profit
is ok
that is business. If you are too high it will not sell.
Your talents and possessions came from whom?
God requests his Ten percent, the rest is offerings.
5. If you are of God you will walk in the Spirit. 1
Cor 2:14.
A person that is not walking in the Spirit but in the ways of sin are either
Lost, under
an false impression ( illusion ) that they are saved or they if saved are
very miserable and
uncertain of their Salvation. Is Sin causing you to lose the joy of your
salvation.
1 Cor 3:16 CEV All
of you surely know that you are God's temple and that his Spirit lives
in you.
17 Together you are God's holy temple, and God will destroy anyone
who destroys his temple.
A saved person died to the Flesh.
Christ died so a believer could have deliverance from the Flesh.
1 Cor 2:13 CEV
Every word we speak was taught to us by God's Spirit, not by human wisdom.
And this same Spirit helps us teach spiritual things to spiritual people.
14 That's why only someone who has God's Spirit can understand spiritual
blessings.
Anyone who doesn't have God's Spirit thinks these blessings are foolish.
15 People who are guided by the Spirit can make all kinds of
judgments,
but they cannot be judged by others.
Romans 8:6 If
our minds are ruled by our desires, we will die. But if our minds are ruled
by the Spirit, we will have life and peace.
Facts:
1. Paul in his writing as well as many of the Old Testament writers inspired
of the Lord,
Paint a vivid image of a soul without in their heart Christ.
The sad fact is a person ( soul ) living in the Flesh is lost to eternality
unless they accept
Christ as saviour while they are living on the earth.
Don’t Let that day Pass you by.
2 Cor 6:2 CEV
In the Scriptures God says, "When the time came, I listened to you, and
when you needed help,
I came to save you." That time has come. This is the day for you to be
saved.
Break away from the eternal punishment in the lake of fire ( Hell ) by
accepting Christ Jesus
as you substitution for the penalty of sin you would have to pay. You would
have to be raised
from the dead. Christ paid the price. Romans 6:23
2. The apostle Paul at the same occasion compares the reception of The
Grace of God.
The Gospel 1 Cor 15:1-11; John 14:6.
3. To live in the Flesh, the power of sin in you life. Remaining in a status
with our Christ is to die
both physical and spiritual, in fact they are already dead spiritually.
The lone less of the absent
of The Comforter is a very empty feeling. Man was not created to live with
out God.
It is your to chose.
4. The opposite is to let the Spirit Rule.
Then the believer has Life and Peace.
The Grammar in the original is present tense. NOW, at this present instant.
Romans 8:7 Our
desires fight against God, because they do not and cannot obey God’s laws.
Facts:
1. A fleshly mind is in opposition to God, An adversary of God.
2. An unsaved person cannot satisfy God.
3. If the Law of God could save, then the worldly mind could not please
God.
Heb 11:6 CEV But
without faith no one can please God. e must believe that God is real
and that he rewards
everyone who searches for him.
4. Are you combating God today? If you have not received Christ as you
Lord,
Saviour, and Master you are a rival ( not aligned with ) of God.
John 3:15 CEV Then everyone who has faith in the Son of Man will
have eternal life.
16 God loved the people of this world so much that he gave his only
Son,
so that everyone who has faith
in
him will have eternal life and never really
die.
17 God did not send his Son into the world to condemn its people.
He sent him to save them!
18 No one who has faith
in God's Son will be condemned.
But everyone who doesn't have faith in him has already been
condemned for not having faith in God's only Son.
Three of these four verses state that faith solitary is required for Salvation.
Translation after translation makes it so plain that Christ paid the price.
He performed everything that the word of God spelled out must happen
for Christ to be the saviour sent from ( by ) God the Father.
It has been repeated that God wants the Glory. If man has to remain
believing and not lose their ability to reason and think. That would be
man
sharing God’s glory. At the Least one could call it Conditional Salvation. If
man had to do his part then God would have to share the glory.
Water Baptism, church membership, or good work was necessary to save
or to keep us saved God would be sharing the glory with man.
Romans 8:8 If
we follow our desires, we cannot please God.
Facts:
1. Plain in God’s word if you are not saved you cannot please God.
A. If you save a person physical life you still cannot please God.
B. Being Good to someone will not please God.
C. No Good and righteous act or work will save. Eph
2:8-9
We have no right to even say ( boast ) that we live a good life. The spirit
of
Christ makes us what we are.
Eph 2:7 CEV God
did this so that in the future world he could show how truly good
and kind he is to us because of what Christ Jesus has done.
8 You were saved by faith
in God, who treats us much better than
we deserve.
This is God's gift to you, and not anything you have done on your own.
9 It isn't something you have earned, so there is nothing you can
brag about.
10 God planned for us to do good things and to live as he has always
wanted us to live.
That's why he sent Christ to make us what we are.
The fact that a decision is necessary in order to become a Christian is
an idea quite foreign
to many people. Some imagine that they are already Christians because they
were born
in a Christian country… Others suppose that, having had a Christian upbringing,
and having
been taught to accept the Christian creed and Christian standards of behaviour,
nothing
further is required of them. But whatever his parentage and upbringing,
every responsible adult
is obliged to make up his own mind for or against Christ.
We cannot remain neutral. Nor can anybody else settle the matter for us.
We must decide for ourselves……
We may concede that the evidence for the deity of Jesus is Compelling,
even
conclusive, and that he was in fact the Son of God; we may believe that
he came
and died to be the Saviour of the world;
We may also admit that we are sinners and need such a Saviour. But none
of
these things makes us a Christian, nor do all of them together. To believe
certain
facts about the person and work of Christ is a necessary preliminary,
but true faith will translate such mental belief into a decisive act of
trust.
Intellectual conviction must lead to personal commitment.

2. Christ said too turn loose of self and take up His cross.
Mat 16:24; Mark 8:34; Mark 10:25; Luke 9:23.
3. The Name of Christ to the Jews means He is the promised Messiah. He
was sent of
God the Father. Died, buried, and raised from the dead.
1 John 2:12 CEV
Children, I am writing you, because your sins have been forgiven
in the name of Christ.
How has God’s Children been Forgiven? Christ.
By faith. Nothing is mention about Water Baptism, or other
works of man’s righteousness.
A. Christ gave His life. No one took it. John
19:30
B. Sheep dumb Isa 53:7; Acts 8:32
C. Christ said it is finished John 19:30
Romans 8:9 You are
no longer ruled by your desires, but by God’s Spirit, who lives in you.
People who don’t have the Spirit of Christ in them don’t belong to him.
Facts:
1. Paul through the Holy Spirit states that his readers are not in the
flesh.
The flesh no longer rules over them.
2. He states they are in the Spirit ( Holy Ghost ).
3. Repeatedly Paul affirms the Spirit of God dwells or better lives in
each Child of
God.
4. The writer inspired of God ( 2 Tim 3:16 )
writes if you don’t have this
Spirit of Christ you don’t belong to God the father that gives them to
the
Son of God.
John 10:26 CEV But since you are not my sheep,
you don't believe me.
27 My sheep know my voice,
and I know them. They follow me,
28 and I give them eternal life, so that they will never
be lost.
No one can snatch them out of my hand.
Do you know God’s Spirit is dwelling in you?
5. Jesus said, follow me.
Mat 4:19; Mat 8:22; Mat 9:9; Mat 16:24; Mat 19:21;
Mark 2:14; Mark 8:34; Mark 10:21; Luke 5:27; Luke 9:23, 59;
John 1:43; John 21:22
6. Paul, John, Mark, Luke, Matthew, James, Peter, all of the apostles and
the Old
Testament Prophets knew their salvation was secure because the Spirit of
God
dwelt in them ( quicken ). The Holy Spirit lives within each born again
believer
in this age. God Spirit is poured out on every believers in this age. Joel
2:28-29
7. Yes you can know you are saved God’s words verify we can know.
1 John 5:10-13; John 10:27.
8. Spirit of God and Spirit of Christ are the same.
John 10:30; Romans 8:9; 1 Peter 1:11
John 10:30 CEV and I am one with the Father.
9. Believers are preserved by the Spirit.
Eph 1:13; Eph 4:30.
10. God is a Spirit John 4:24.
11. Spirit Gives life Gen 2:7; Romans 8:11.
12. Spirit makes intervention Romans 8:26.
13. Grieve not the Spirit of God Eph 4:30.
14. Quench not the Spirit 1 Thess 5:19
We as believers can Grieve and Quench the spirit to the point
God’s present cannot be felt. You lose that assurance.
If you sinned against your human father you are still always
will be his son, but your fellowship will be greatly hurt.
Read Luke 15:11-32 the lost son.
15. It is so distressing to be saved and lose the fellowship and rewards
of God.
1 Cor 3:13-15.
1 Cor 3:11 CEV
because Christ is the only foundation.
12 Whatever we build on that foundation will be tested by fire on
the day of judgment.
Then everyone will find out if we have used gold, silver, and precious
stones, or wood, hay,
13 (SEE 3:12)
14 We will be rewarded if our building is left standing.
15 But if it is destroyed by the fire, we will lose everything.
Yet we ourselves will be saved, like someone escaping from flames.
16 All of you surely know that you are God's temple and that his
Spirit lives in you.
Because in verse 11 the only foundation is
Christ.
Again no mention of church membership, good works, or water baptism
just only making a decisive act to place the trust for your soul and life
in the finished work of Christ.
John 14:6 CEV
"I am the way, the truth, and the life!" Jesus answered.
"Without me, no one can go to the Father.
The more anything is repeated to more significant.
1 Tim 2:4 CEV God wants everyone to
be saved and to know the whole truth, which is,
5 There is only one God, and Christ Jesus is the only one who can
bring us to God. Jesus was truly human, and he gave himself to rescue all
of us.
Heard a song the other day that called Christ Jesus the
Man in the middle I think that does a good Job of
explaining what Christ is doing today. It tells to story
of the security of our soul, the reason God doesn’t want
man to blow his own horn. I has to be God that does the
saving, God has to accomplish the keeping. I being man could
boast I water baptized this many souls into God’s church.
That may be ok for the Local visible church. We are not water
baptized into God’s invisible church. I say invisible because
only God can see into a person’s heart. Only God knows His
sheep.
Luke 16:15; Acts 1:24; Gal 4:6; Eph 3:17.
Eph 3:17 CEV
and that Christ will live in your hearts because of your faith.
Stand firm and be deeply rooted in his love.
Romans 8:10 But Christ
lives in you. So you are alive because God has accepted you,
even though your bodies must die because of your sins.
Facts:
1. Paul at this juncture begins once more to states the positive.
He has been
telling about what happens to the lost. The lost are the ones in bondage
of sin.
2. If the world sees you are acting like the lost, most likely you are
bound by the
slavery of sin. According to the bible if you don’t know that you are a
child of God
you are in the slavery of sin once saved your body is dead to sin. Then
are you
bound for Hell? The Lost in the end will never see God or your loved ones
again.
No more tears. Rev 21:4.
3. You who are in Christ, your body is dead to sin. The Holy Spirit is
God.
Sin separates us from God. The Spirit of Christ dwells in the believer.
Sin will not cause the Spirit to leave but it will smother to the point
no one can see that you are a child of God. God chastises the disobedient.
Mat 25:14-23 ; John 1:12
Heb 12:4 CEV None of you have yet been hurt in your battle against sin.
5 But you have forgotten that the Scriptures say to God's children,
"When the Lord punishes you, don't make light of it,
and when he corrects you, don't be discouraged.
6 The Lord corrects the people he loves and disciplines those he
calls his own."
7 Be patient when you are being corrected!
This is how God treats his children.
