Holy Ghost
-- Holy Spirit New Testament
The Holy Spirit, N.T. Summary
1 The Holy Spirit is revealed as a divine Person.
This is expressly declared John 14:16,17;
John 15:26; John 16:7-15; Mat 28:19 and everywhere implied.
John
14:16 KJV And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter,
that he may abide with you for ever;
17 Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it
seeth him not,
neither knoweth him: but ye know him;
for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.
In this verse 17 there
is consent reference to the muscular gender of a person.
In the use of the pronouns he, him.
John
14:16-21 NIV
16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to
be with you forever--
17 the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither
sees him nor knows him.
But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.
18 I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.
19 Before long, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me.
Because I live, you also will live.
20 On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in
me, and I am in you.
21 Whoever has my commands and obeys them, he is the one who loves me.
He who loves me will be loved by my Father,
and I too will love him and show myself to him."
And we Know him . Why because he
dwells in you?
A. This raises another question If he
dwells in a person is that person then saved?
B. If the believer is saved how long is the believer
saved ?
C. If he dwells in you the believer saved by
the Grace of God does the believer know him?
D. Why is it repeated in the same verse dwell
in you and shall be in you.
E. Who Does the Spirit abide in?
F. How Great a Salvation of God or of Man?
G. If the believer has the Spirit in them and
Christ in the father, the believer in Christ, and the
believers
ownership is of God or Your self?
Then how can the
believer be lost? The believer is saved for ever (eternally).
Eternal Life.
H. If the believer has the Holy Spirit dwelling
in them they have His commands and will obey them.
The believer will love Jesus. If the believer loves Jesus then the Father
loves the believer.
Do you feel loved by Jesus?
Have you seen Jesus?
Have you Meet Jesus?
Answers
A. Yes that is the only way one can have the Holy Spirit. John
3:5-8.
To the First it came on the day of Pentecost.
B. The in verse 16 say abide with you forever. John
4:4-26 .
That means the believer you are saved eternal.
John 4:14 But whosoever drinketh of the water that
I shall give him shall never thirst;
but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing
up into everlasting life.
This was Jesus talking.
C. verse
17 says we know him. Why because he dwells in you.
1 John 5:8-13
D. It is
repeated because of the important of his indwelling and empowering the
Christian for service.
Through out the bible when there is something of great important or that
one should take notice.
It was usually repeated twice. example Verify, Verify, .
Mat 28:19 KJV Go ye therefore, and
teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father,
and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you:
and, lo,
I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.
E. You, The
believer.
F. Verse
20. God-- that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I
am in you.
G. God
H. God does
the loving through the believer.
2 The revelation concerning Him is progressive
a. In the O.T. He comes upon whom He will,
apparently without reference to conditions in them
b. During His earth-life, Christ taught His disciples
Luke
11:13 that they might receive the Spirit through
prayer to the Father.
Luke 11:13 If ye then, being evil,
know how to give good gifts unto your children:
how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that
ask him?
c. At the close of His ministry He promised that
He would Himself pray the Father, and that in answer to
prayer the Comforter
would come to abide John 14:16-17.
John 14:16 And I will pray the Father,
and he shall give you another Comforter,
that he may abide with you for ever;
17 Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it
seeth him not,
neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall
be in you.
18 ¶ I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.
d. On the evening of His resurrection He came to the
disciples in the upper room, and breathed on them
saying, "Receive
ye the Holy Ghost" John 20:22-23 but instructed them to wait before
beginning
their ministry till the Spirit
should come upon them Luke 24:49; Acts 1:8.
Luke 24:45 Then opened he their understanding,
that they might understand the scriptures,
46 And said unto them, Thus it is written,
and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third
day:
47 And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his
name
among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.
48 And ye are witnesses of these things.
49 And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you:
but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem,
until ye be endued with power from on high.
e. On the day of Pentecost the Spirit came
upon the whole body of believers Acts 2:1-4
f. After Pentecost, so long as the Gospel
was preached to Jews only, the Spirit was imparted to such as
believed by the laying
on of hands Acts 8:17; 9:17.
g. When Peter opened the door of the kingdom to
the Gentiles (Acts 10.), the Holy Spirit,
without delay, or
other condition
than faith, was given to those who believed. Acts
10:44; 11:15-18.
Acts 11:13 And he shewed us how he
had seen an angel in his house,
which stood and said unto him,
Send men to Joppa, and call for Simon, whose surname is Peter;
14 Who shall tell thee words, whereby thou and all thy house shall be saved.
15 And as I began to speak, the Holy Ghost fell on them, as on us at the
beginning.
16 Then remembered I the word of the Lord, how that he said,
John indeed baptized with water;
but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost.
17 Forasmuch then as God gave them the like gift as he did unto us,
who believed on the Lord Jesus Christ; what was I, that I could withstand
God?
18 When they heard these things, they held their peace,
and glorified God, saying, Then hath God also to the Gentiles granted
repentance unto life.
Here again the preached the Gospel and Baptism of the Holy Spirit.
This is the permanent fact for the entire church
age. Every believer is born of the Spirit John
3:3,6,
1 John 5:1 indwelt
by the Spirit,
Whose presence makes the believer's body
a temple 1 Cor 6:19; Romans 8:9-15; 1 John 2:27; Gal 4:6
Gal 4:6 And
because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your
hearts, crying, Abba,
Father.
and baptized
by the Spirit 1 Cor 12:12-13
1
Cor 12:12-13 NIV
12 The body is a unit, though it is made up of many parts; and though all
its parts are many,
they form one body. So it is with Christ.
13 For we were all baptized by one Spirit
into one body--whether Jews or Greeks, slave
or free--
and we were all given the one Spirit to drink.
; 1
John 2:20,27
1 John 2:20-27 NIV
20 But you have an anointing from the Holy One,
and all of you know the truth.
21 I do not write to you because you do not know the truth, but because
you do know it and
because no lie comes from the truth.
22 Who is the liar? It is the man who denies that Jesus is the Christ.
Such a man is the antichrist--
he denies the Father and the Son.
23 No one who denies the Son has the Father; whoever acknowledges
the Son has the Father also.
24 See that what you have heard from the beginning remains in you. If it
does,
you also will remain in the Son and in the Father.
25 And this is what he promised us--even eternal life.
26 I am writing these things to you about those who are trying to lead
you astray.
27 As for you, the anointing you received from him remains in you, and
you do not need anyone
to teach you.
But as his anointing teaches you about all things and as that anointing
is real, not counterfeit--
just as it has taught you, remain in him.
The believer is
baptized in the Holy Spirit and that anointing is real.
Thus sealing him for eternally for God Eph 1:13;
4:30.
Eph 1:13-14 NIV
13 And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth,
the gospel of your salvation. Having believed, you were marked in him with
a seal,
the promised Holy Spirit,
14 who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of
those who are God's
possession--to the praise of his glory.
Having Believed is the only requirement that is mention. Hearing the Gospel
(1
Cor 15:1-11)
of your salvation. God marks the believer with a mark (
a seal of authority) to identify
the believer as His (God's) own. Once a soul
accept Jesus as their saviour that soul is
bought (paid for) with a price and God becomes the owner.
1
Cor 6:20 KJV For ye are bought with a price:
therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit,
which are God's.
1Cor 6:19-20 NIV
19 Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is
in you,
whom you have received from God? You are not your own;
20 you were bought at a price.
Therefore honor God with your body.
Verse 19 whom a pronoun a person.
Verse the use of the verb were and are presenting the impression
of both past and present.
The is no looking forward to being saved. Is God going to sell you soul?
Who is he going
to sell your soul too, the Devil? If you have received Jesus as God's remedy
for the sin of
the world { Adam's sin ( Romans 5:12)} and you personal sins past, present,
and future.
There is a big
difference in Salvation and rewards or lose of rewards to the believer.
There is a
difference in degrees
of punishment for the lost. Many people by not following rules of study
Get
these all mixed
up. You must be careful to understand what, why, who, when and where
things are
talked about. If you
study a good journalism class they will teach to get the what, why, who,
when,
and where of the story.
When science starts
to study a problem he does a what, why, who, when, and where of the problem.
When
I worked in a auto parts store or as a mechanic. I always had to know 5
things.
What == the problem and the type or make of care.
Why== to sell the right part or to make the repair stay fixed I needed
to know why it failed.
Who== Who came in to play a lot of the times in a small town in ar. the
was usually two prices of
repair parts.
When== when
the car was made a lot of difference in the diagnosis and the part that
fit the car.
Where== I have
already explain why I need to know where.
To Fully understand a passages or
passages you need to have a plan of attack ( study ).
If one really wants to know the answers you need a plan of
study that works from Gen - through Rev.
If Ford Motor Company makes a Decision
to change a bulb they are going to put in one of their cars, They
have to let the radio, brakes, and ect engineers know
because it can affect how something works. If you
change the type of brake light bulb in the rear of
a Chevy the anti-lock brakes will not work.
In a computer if you add a new hard drive it will not
work unless you follow certain rules.
Jumpers have to be set. Then some times it still will
not work. Then you try and old standby rule
with Fdisk it works then. This is a rule very
few people know. but you have to know it before the
system will work.
3 Because a numbers of things of the Holy Spirit occur simultaneously
at the time the believer is
Born Again, Born in to
God's Family. John 1:12,18; Mat 5:9
Luke 20:36 Neither can they die any
more: for they are equal unto the angels;
and are the children of God, being the children of the resurrection.
Careful distinction should
be made of the difference undertaking of The Holy Spirit (Ghost).
The indwelling of the Spirit and the regeneration
of the Spirit are not the same. They do however
occur simultaneously.
Like wise the indwelling
and regeneration are not the same as the baptism of the Spirit.
Neither are these The same as the Filling of
the Spirit.
Although the indwelling of
the Spirit is the same as the anointing and the Sealing of the Holy Spirit.
This fact of the anointing and Indwelling of the Spirit
is a feature of this Age.
1 Cor 6:19 What? know ye not that
your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you,
which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?
20 For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body,
and in your spirit,
which are God's.
John 14:17; Romans 7:6; 8:9; 1 Cor 6:19-20; 2 Cor 1:21; 3:6; 1 John 2:20,
27.
In this age every believer
has this anointing and indwelling of the Spirit.
As contrasted to the other ages of the past only selected
souls received this present of the
Holy Spirit for various reason. In all of the past
cases It Gave to some special powers.
What this indwelling does is set the believer apart
for God or he is sanctified for God.
The N.T. distinguishes
between having the Spirit, which is true of all believers,
and being filled with the Spirit, which is the believer's
privilege and duty.
(cp)
Acts 2:4 with Acts 4:29-31; Eph 1:13-14
with
Eph 5:18. --"One baptism, many fillings."
(4) The Holy Spirit is related to Christ:
in His Conception
Mat
1:18-20; Luke 1:35,
baptism Mat
3:16; Mark 1:10; Luke 3:22; John 1:32-33
walk and service Luke
4:1,14
resurrection Romans
8:11,
and as His witness throughout this age
John
15:26-27; John 16:8-11,13-14.
(5) The Spirit forms the church Mat 16:18 cp
[Heb 12:23]
by baptizing all believers
into the body of Christ 1 Cor 12:12-13,
imparts gifts for service to
every member of that body 1 Cor 12:7-11,27,30,
guide the members in their
service Luke 2:27; 4:1; Acts 16:6-7
and is Himself the power of
that service Acts 1:8; 2:4; 1 Cor 2:4.
(6) The Spirit abides in the company of believers who constitute
a local church, making of them, corporately,
a temple 1
Cor 3:16-17.
(7) Christ indicates a threefold personal relationship of the Spirit
to the believer: "With", "In", "upon"
John 14:17; Luke 24:49;
Acts 1:8.
"With" indicates the approach of God to the soul,
convicting of sin John 16:9
presenting Christ as the object of faith ( glorify Jesus ) John
16:14
imparting faith Eph 2:8
and regenerating John 3:3-16.
"In" describes the abiding presence of the
Spirit in the believer's body 1 Cor 6:19
to give victory over the flesh Romans 8:2-4;
Gal 5:16-17
to create the Christian character Gal 5:22-23
to help infirmities Romans 8:26
to inspire prayer Eph 6:18
to give conscious access to God Eph 2:18
to actualize to the believer his sonship Gal
4:6
to apply the Scripture in cleansing and sanctification Eph
5:26; 2 Thes 2:13; 1 Peter 1:2
to comfort and intercede Acts 9:31; Romans
8:26
and to reveal Christ John 16:14.
(8) Sins against the Spirit committed by unbelievers are:
To blaspheme Mat
12:31,
resist Acts
7:51,
insult Heb
10:29, "despite," lit. insult).
Believers' sins against the Spirit are:
To grieve Him by allowing evil in heart or life Eph
4:30-31
and to quench Him by disobedience 1
Thes 5:19.
The right attitude toward the
Spirit is yieldedness to His sway in walk and service, and in constant
willingness that He shall "put away" whatever
grieves Him or hinders His power Eph 4:31.
Eph
4:30-32 NIV
30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed
for the day of redemption.
31 Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along
with every form of malice
32 Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just
as in Christ God
forgave you.
(9) The Seven symbols of the Spirit are:
A. oil John 3:34;
Heb 1:9,
B. water John 7:38-39,
C. wind Acts 2:2;
John 3:8,
D. fire Acts 2:3,
E. a dove Mat 3:16,
F. a seal Eph 1:13;
4:30,
G. an earnest or pledge Eph
1:14
10. The Holy Spirit is stated repeatedly to be a gift
of God. Then a gift by its nature is something made
without merit on
the part of the recipient.
2 Cor 5:5 KJV Now he that hath wrought us for the
selfsame thing is God,
who also hath given unto us the earnest of the Spirit.
6 Therefore we are always confident, knowing that, whilst we are at home
in the body,
we are absent from the Lord:
7 (For we walk by faith, not by sight:)
Now lets look at the verses in the NIV
2 Cor 5:5-7 NIV
5 Now it is God who has made us for this very purpose and has given us
the Spirit as a deposit,
guaranteeing
what is to come.
6 Therefore we are always confident and know that as long as we are at
home in the body
we are away from the Lord.
7 We live by faith, not by sight.
If we walk by sight it is man in man's righteousness trying to be saved
or stay saved.
Who's
Salvation is it God saving Man or Man saving man?
Is
the created trying to save the created?
Or
is it the creator saving his creation?
Eze 33:13 NIV
13 If I tell the righteous man that he will surely live, but then he trusts
in his righteousness
and
does evil, none of the righteous things he has done will be remembered;
he will die for the evil he has done.
[Bible in Basic English] (Ezekiel 33:13)
When I say to the upright that life will certainly be his; if he
puts his faith in his righteousness and
does evil, not one of his upright acts will be kept in memory;
but in the evil he has done, death will overtake him.
Here is a righteous man . Righteous of his own righteousness.
Luke 18:11-14 NIV
11 The Pharisee stood up and prayed about himself:
`God, I thank you that I am not like other men--robbers, evildoers, adulterers--
or even like this tax collector.
12 I fast twice a week and give a tenth of all I get.'
13 "But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up
to heaven,
but beat his breast and said, God, have mercy on me, a sinner.'
14 "I tell you that this man, rather than the other, went home justified
before God.
For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled,
and he who humbles himself will be exalted."
The in verse 13 we have the sinner ( the wicked one). Again I ask
the same question who got saved?
Was he baptized? How did he get mercy ( ME - CRY)?
The sinner said God, have mercy on me, a sinner. Is this the
sinners prayer?
Most men are macho. In fact they a too macho to get save. I have
the say all of the time I am not going to commit to any thing. Man has
a problem of asking someone else for help. This is what the sinner has
to do.
The sinner has to Just ask God for help. Humble your self.
1
Tim 2:3-7 NIV
3 This is good, and pleases God our Savior,
4 who wants all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.
5 For there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ
Jesus,
6 who gave himself as a ransom for all men--the testimony given in its
proper time.
7 And for this purpose I was appointed a herald and an apostle--I am telling
the truth,
I am not lying--and a teacher of the true faith to the Gentiles.
In verse 3 God wants all to be saved. How many ways does the
Bible here say the sinner can be saved?
How many ways? One God. One way to get man and God together,
the man Jesus Christ.
What do we need to add to Jesus. Verse 5 only says Jesus.
Verse tells why Jesus is the way. Gave himself as a ransom for all
men. It did not just say special men.
Did it say some had to be baptized, some had to take of the Lord
Supper, Did it say some had to belong
to that kind of Church? Did it say the muslin's are saved a difference
way? What about the Buddhist?
verse say there is ONE MEDIATOR.
The Indwelling of the Holy Spirit sets apart the believer to his
new life. Do you have that new life?
If not there is something wrong with your salvation. You need God's
Salvation.
2
Cor 1:21 KJV Now he which stablisheth us with you in Christ, and hath anointed
us, is God;
22 Who hath also sealed us,
and given the earnest of the Spirit in our
hearts.
2 Cor 1:21-22 NIV
21 Now it is God who makes both us and you stand firm in Christ. He anointed
us,
22 set his seal of ownership on us, and
put his Spirit in our hearts as a deposit,
guaranteeing what is to come.
1 John 2:20,27
God seals
God put his Spirit in our hearts for
a deposit.
God guarantees
